Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) presents Opening Night Beatriz González: A Retrospective

Enjoy an engaging conversation at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) with artist Beatriz González, Mari Carmen Ramírez, Wortham Curator of Latin American Art and Director of International Center for the Arts of the Americas at the MFA Houston, and Tobias Ostrander, PAMM Chief Curator on Thursday, April 18th from 7-8:30pm. The artist and exhibition co-curators will discuss González’s practice that spans six decades and how it helped shape her first large-scale U.S. retrospective. Beatriz González: A Retrospective will be on view through September 1, 2019. The discussion will take place in Spanish with simultaneous interpretation into English. Seating begins by 6:45pm. Free with museum admission.

The painterly complexity of his haunting post-apocalyptic style landscapes and still lifes has critics hailing Jansen as one of the most important American painter of his generation. Jansen’s art is rooted in the New York Graffiti scene, but years spent in Germany garnered influence from the Expressionists to develop a language that speaks of a world in turmoil with isolation, threat, war, surveillance and greed in competition with innocence, hope and humanity.

“Jansen has been called the cartographer of conflict” stated Lisa Burgess, owner of New River Fine Art. “His colors, textures and calligraphic marks imbue an intensity and power to his large-scale paintings that render the human figures seen in many of his works as humbled within the chaos of the surrounding imagery.” Jansen is no stranger to this type of chaos. A veteran of Desert Storm and Desert Shield, he has seen the ravages of war first hand and the experience left an indelible mark on the artist and informs his work.

Gallery Director Wissam Elghoul says “Jansen uses light and color to convey a sense of hope in his post-apocalyptic style landscapes. Despite the turmoil, there is a sense that humanity may prevail”. When asked about his own work, the artist comments, “A Painter’s conflict first takes place from within. What you see on canvas is the outcome of decisions based on an intellectual and visual combat. I don’t see my work as political paintings, rather as critical social commentary opposed to political rhetoric.” Political or not, critics are hailing Marcus Jansen as one of the most important American painters of our generation.

Canine Art, Man's Best Friend, Flying Dogs — Oh My!

Renowned South Florida artist Skip Hartzell creates unique art inspired by man’s best friend. His inspiration comes in the form of a morning walk, accompanied by a furry friend. The canine-inspired artworks that he creates are figments of his artistic imagination and creative vision. Hartzell creates directly from his emotions and instincts, his work is inspired by dogs of all shapes, sizes and varieties.

"I was walking through a shopping mall on the top floor and happened to look down at children wildly jumping and playing in this wonderland below. From the vantage point up high, the children looked like tiny elves and fairies jumping, laughing and happily playing in a breakfast-themed playground. I hurriedly went home, grabbed my camera and for several weeks returned to document the children playing. The short film, PLAY, is about the Magic. I am honored that two of the photographs from this series are featured in a prestigious, Curated Photography Collection by Hamburg Kennedy for Foster Care along with Diane Arbus, Sally Mann, Elliott Erwitt and Martin Parr."

NSU Art Museum: Art Roundtable Featuring Tina La Porta

Artist Tina La Porta will discuss her decade-long body of work, Side Effects, a series that explores and expresses her struggles with her diagnosis of mental illness. “Since being diagnosed with schizophrenia, my work has become a method to talk about my disability through the language of visual art. In this sense, despite my disability, I am able to express myself and be a vital part of society,” says La Porta.

Born in 1967 in Chicago, La Porta moved to New York’s East Village in 1992 to pursue her Master of Fine Arts degree at The School of Visual Arts.
