Discover Wifredo Lam’s Legacy This Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrate the cultures, identities, and artistic traditions that shape Latin American art through Wifredo Lam’s Legacy at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. Born in Cuba in 1902 to a Chinese immigrant father and Afro-Cuban mother, Wifredo Lam became a groundbreaking transnational artist whose work brought together Surrealism, Afro-Cuban traditions, African identity, and the tropical landscape. Featuring works drawn exclusively from the Museum’s collection, the exhibition explores Lam’s lasting influence on generations of Cuban and Latin American artists, including José Bedia, Ana Mendieta, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Kcho, Los Carpinteros, and others. (MOAD) Museum of Art and Design at MDC presents Abstraction as Legacy as part of the AMERICA 250 Celebrations

 

Museums throughout the U.S. are honoring America250 with exhibitions and programming that examine the past, present, and future of the United States of America. (MOAD) Museum of Art and Design at MDC makes its own contribution to America250 celebrations with an exhibition titled Abstraction as Legacy. 

This project brings together a group of paintings to reflect on the myriad ways in which American artists have contributed to the field of abstraction. Works by Willem de Kooning and Joan Mitchell speak to abstract expressionism while works by Lloyd Kiva New and George Morrison reinforce ways in which indigenous artists contributed to the history of painterly abstraction in the U.S. 

This show demonstrates that there is no one way to be an American artist just as there is no way be an American. Some artists in the exhibition lived abroad while others were born abroad. Some chose hard edges informed by architecture while others used abstraction to contemplate the natural environment. 

This exhibition includes paintings by Carmen Herrera, Willem de Kooning, Sam Gilliam, Virginia Jaramillo, Joan Mitchell, Young-Il An, George Morrison, Lloyd Kiva New, Vaughn Spann, Zilia Sánchez, Hans Hofmann and Noemí Ruiz.as well as a salon style wall of works on paper from the collection by Karen Rifas, Sol LeWitt, Robert Thiele, Raymond Saunders, Robert Huff, Louise Nevelson, Lynne Golob Gelfman, and Robert Mangold.

Bakehouse Announces Winning Design for "Triumphal Arch" Open Call

Bakehouse Art Complex, in collaboration with French architecture and urban design practice Coldefy, has selected The Porch by architects and educators Elmer O. García and Olga Kusche-Iglesias as the winning proposal for its "Triumphal Arch" Open Call.

Conceived as a contemporary reimagining of the triumphal arch, The Porch draws inspiration from the social and architectural traditions of South Florida and the Caribbean. Constructed from aluminum tubing and repurposed lawn chair components, the design transforms the gateway into an inviting space for gathering, rest, and community exchange.

"The Porch stood out for its conceptual clarity, material ingenuity, and deeply local approach to public space," said the selection panel. "The proposal captures Bakehouse's commitment to creative innovation and community-building while transforming familiar everyday objects into an inviting architectural experience."

The installation will serve as the entrance to Bakehouse's new community garden and outdoor programming space in Wynwood Norte, supporting exhibitions, workshops, performances, and neighborhood events. Learn more HERE.

Experience 'Monumentalizing the Trace' at The Frank Pembroke Pines, the first solo exhibition by the collaborative artist duo TREIZMAN + ZURILLA

Monumentalizing the Trace by TREIZMAN + ZURILLA, formed by Miami-based artists Denise Treizman and Julia Zurilla, OPENS on May 14th and is on view at The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery through August 29, 2026.

Monumentalizing the Trace presents the first solo exhibition by the collaborative artist duo TREIZMAN + ZURILLA, formed by Miami-based artists Denise Treizman and Julia Zurilla, on view at The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery from May 14 through August 29, 2026. Conceived as a continuous installation that unfolds across the gallery, the exhibition transforms the space into an immersive environment where image, material, and architecture converge. Art lovers and the community are invited to attend the Opening Reception for Monumentalizing the Trace on Thursday, May 14th from 6–9pm at The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery. This event is free & open to the public, located at 601 City Center Way in Pembroke Pines, Florida 33025.

Working across video, sculpture, and spatial intervention, Treizman and Zurilla construct a dynamic dialogue between analog and digital processes, presence and absence, permanence and impermanence. Familiar elements appear displaced and reconfigured, inviting viewers to reconsider the ways objects, images, and fragments accumulate meaning over time. Rather than presenting the monument as a fixed symbol of permanence, the artists shift attention toward the trace—the fragment, the remainder, the subtle evidence of transformation. In doing so, Monumentalizing the Trace proposes that what endures after change—the residual mark, the fleeting image, the material echo—may itself become a form of monument.

The collaboration between Treizman and Zurilla emerged from a shared interest in tension, contradiction, and material interplay as generative forces. What began as an experimental encounter during Stile Tale at Satellite Art Show in 2023 has evolved into an ongoing artistic investigation into how two distinct practices can remain intact while producing a shared visual language. Their work embraces paradox as a creative engine, placing opposites in productive relation: material and immaterial, analog and digital, fragility and structure, excess and restraint.

This investigation has taken form in immersive installations such as Coincidentia Oppositorum (2023), DREAMCATCHER (infinity loop) (2024), and Luminous Vacancy (2025). Through these environments, TREIZMAN + ZURILLA approach collaboration not as fusion, but as a dynamic space where difference becomes the catalyst for new aesthetic and conceptual territories.

Denise Treizman (Santiago, Chile) is a Miami-based artist whose practice combines repurposed materials, handcrafted elements, and remnants of mass consumption to create immersive sculptural installations. Her work explores systems of accumulation, transformation, and material memory. Treizman has presented solo exhibitions at institutions including the Wiregrass Museum of Art, Coral Springs Museum of Art, and Tiger Strikes Asteroid Chicago, and has participated in group exhibitions throughout the United States and internationally. She has completed residencies at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, MASS MoCA, and NARS Foundation, among others. Recent recognitions include the South Florida Cultural Consortium Award (2024), the Oolite Arts Ellies Creator Award (2025), and the No Vacancy Public Art Award (2025). She holds an MFA from the School of Visual Arts and is a resident artist at Laundromat Art Space in Miami.

Julia Zurilla (Caracas, Venezuela) is a Miami-based multidisciplinary artist whose work explores themes of memory, displacement, and belonging. Working with 8 mm film, digital video, photography, and generative text, she constructs fragmented narratives that move fluidly between analog and digital worlds. Zurilla has received several awards, including The Ellies Cinematic Award (2025), the Green Space Miami Open Call Award (2025), and the No Vacancy Public Art Award (2024). Her work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including Galería de Arte Nacional (Venezuela), MAC Lima (Peru), Coral Gables Museum, CIFO Miami, and Americas Society in New York, and is held in several private and institutional collections. She holds a BFA and MFA from IUESAPAR and is a resident artist at Laundromat Art Space.

Luján Candria

Miami-based Argentine artist Luján Candria works across a wide range of media to create introspective works that explore memory, reminiscence, and oblivion. Luján often uses the repetition and juxtaposition of images to create intimate and poetic narratives imbued with nostalgia.

Sterling Rook

Miami-based artist Sterling Rook works across sculpture and fiber, using materials such as forged steel, handmade rope, and organic elements to explore ancestry, craft, and material memory. Drawing from a lineage of textile and fiber traditions on both sides of his family, Rook approaches art-making as both a generative and regenerative process, connecting personal and cultural histories across time.

"The Things That Stay"

Experience the opening of artist Angelica Reisch's The Things That Stay,  on view at Miami International Fine Arts (MIFA) from April 9 through May 22, 2026, with an Opening Reception taking place on Thursday, April 9th from 6–8pm.

The exhibition brings together drawings in graphite and oil pastel alongside archival audio recordings, exploring memory, domestic space, and the quiet traces of presence that linger after we leave a place. The work depicts interior environments — bedrooms, kitchens, hallways — rendered not as documentation but as psychological spaces shaped by emotion and recollection. The exhibition is curated by Pamela Solares and is funded in part by a grant from South Arts.

Angelica Reisch is an artist based in St. Petersburg, Florida. Her work has been supported by a FY26 Artist Creative Practice Grant from South Arts, the Mercedes-Benz Financial Services Artist Award, a Nasher Sculpture Center Artist Microgrant, and grants from the Dallas Museum of Art and the Vermont Studio Center.

Bakehouse Art Complex presents Archival Feedback x René Morales

 

Join Archival Feedback for a talk on Bakehouse Freestyle 100, moderated by René Morales, exploring Miami’s history through sound and place at the Bakehouse Art Complex in Wynwood on Wednesday, March 25th from 6 - 8pm. This Event is FREE & Open to the Public, RSVP HERE.

Miami-based artist duo Archival Feedback (Emile Milgrim and Thom Wheeler Castillo) will be joining BAC for an artist talk on Bakehouse Freestyle 100, a recently commissioned sound installation created on the occasion of Bakehouse Art Complex’s 40th anniversary. Moderated by Senior Curatorial Fellow René Morales, the conversation will explore the artists’ approach to sound as a tool for engaging history, landscape, and collective memory.

Centered on Bakehouse’s 100-year-old Art Deco industrial building and its surrounding neighborhoods, Bakehouse Freestyle 100 weaves together two distinct sonic layers: “The Mediated Voice,” a collage of archival recordings tracing the evolution of 20th-century media, and “The Sound of Place,” a composition of environmental field recordings capturing the rhythms of the region. Together, these elements create a dynamic interplay between narrated history and the lived, ambient textures of change.

Drawing from regional archives and digital repositories, the work reflects on Miami’s cultural legacy while holding space for its future. This talk offers an opportunity to hear directly from the artists about their process, research, and ongoing exploration of sound as a means of deep listening and place-based inquiry.

Experience contemporary artist Christian Burnham in an exhibition at ArtExpo New York, Booth S307 at Pier 36 NYC from Thursday, April 9th through Sunday, April 12th. Christian Burnham is a contemporary artist, born in 1973 in Eastbourne, England, and currently based in Hasselt, Belgium. Subject Matter & Vision

Burnham’s art is driven by an innate creative impulse, functioning as both a meditative practice and a form of storytelling. His work strives to evoke emotion, raise awareness, and offer a voice for recovery. He explores the complexities of addiction, healing, and the human experience, frequently delving into themes of spirituality, philosophical questions about reality, and the influence of the pre-conditioned mind. These inquiries form the foundation of his artistic inspiration.

Technique & Process

His artistic process merges street art aesthetics with fine art craftsmanship, using spray paint, acrylics, markers, and Japanese inks in combination with meticulously designed stencils. He works across a variety of surfaces, including canvas, wood, and metals. A vital part of Burnham’s process involves setting up installations of objects, which he photographs to use as references for his compositions. In other instances, he combines several images or draws by hand to construct a scene, later refining the imagery digitally in Illustrator and/or Photoshop. The finalized designs are then translated into hand-cut stencils used in the finished works.

His approach balances controlled precision with spontaneous expression, allowing the artwork to evolve organically while maintaining a strong conceptual focus. His development as an artist has been shaped by personal transformation, experimentation, and a continuous search for new modes of expression. From his earliest works to his most recent pieces, Burnham has consistently pushed the boundaries of stencil art, evolving both technically and conceptually.

The Angels & Demons Series

A pivotal moment in his artistic journey came with the Angels & Demons series, which introduced three-dimensional elements and layered symbolic storytelling. Influenced by his recovery from addiction, Burnham began incorporating cut glass bottles into his work, sealing them with epoxy resin to create sculptural features within his paintings. As part of the process, the bottles were refilled with alcohol, symbolically sealing it away forever. Some were adorned with angel wings to signify redemption, while others bore demon wings to represent struggle and temptation. This series marked not only a technical innovation but also a deeply personal meditation on addiction, resilience, and transformation.

Burnham continues to seek moments of discovery in his creative process—those rare instances when a piece surpasses expectation and reveals something unexpected. His work is in constant evolution, combining symbolism, texture, and unconventional materials to create emotionally resonant visual narratives. He remains dedicated to exploring the intersection of street art, fine art, and conceptual storytelling.

Celebrate Women's History Month at The Contemporary Art Modern Project (CAMP Gallery) enjoying their March exhibition in collaboration with Red Thread Art Studio Miami, Under The Red Tent, on view through April 26, 2026. An immersive fiber exhibition that brings together 20 artists whose practices engage thread and textile as tools of storytelling, connection, and resistance, curated by Aurora Molina, founder of the Red Thread Art Studio Miami.

The gallery celebrated the opening of Under The Red Tent with a special brunch Sunday, March 8th, where the gallery will be serving catering by Rodilla and special drinks by The Sipistry. Red Thread Art Studio Miami was founded by fiber artist Aurora Molina. Under The Red Tent will be on view through Sunday, April 26th. 

In alignment with The CAMP Gallery's emphasis on participation and dialogue, Under The Red Tent incorporates a living oral-history archive that unfolds throughout the exhibition. The exhibition's themes echo the novel The Red Tent by Anita Diamant, where the red tent becomes a physical sanctuary for women to gather during menstruation and childbirth, as a symbol of feminine community, strength, and generational wisdom.

We want to give Happy the life she deserves: freedom, companionship, and care in an elephant sanctuary where she can finally be with others of her kind.
