The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery in Pembroke Pines presents two new exhibition projects opening September 17, 2026: Hyphenated Encounters, a collaborative presentation with Deering Estate featuring the work of Cuban American artist Lilian Garcia-Roig, and Discord and Serenity, curated by RemiJin Camping and featuring works by Barry University MFA students Joy Johnson and Bruna Marcon Weber. Hyphenated Encounters brings together two interconnected curatorial projects—Lilian Garcia-Roig: A Practice of Place, curated by Sophie Bonet, Chief Curator of The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery, and Deering Estate Residency: Lilian Garcia-Roig, Site, and the Labor of Belonging, curated by Liliam Dominguez, Head Curator of Deering Estate. Together, these presentations offer audiences an expansive exploration of place, identity, memory, perception, and the complex inner and outer worlds explored through contemporary art.

Art lovers and aficionados are cordially invited to enjoy the Opening Reception for these new exhibitions on Thursday, September 17th from 6 – 9pm at The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery for an evening of art, conversation, and exploration. Light refreshments will be served, and the event is free and open to the public. The Frank is located at 601 City Center Way in Pembroke Pines, Florida 33025. Opening that evening, Hyphenated Encounters brings together two interconnected curatorial projects presented in collaboration with Deering Estate, while Discord and Serenity will be presented separately in The Frank Third Space. Together, these exhibitions offer audiences an opportunity to explore questions of place, identity, memory, perception, emotion, and the complex relationship between what is seen and what remains hidden.

Hyphenated Encounters: A Practice of Place

Spanning more than three decades of artistic practice, Lilian Garcia-Roig: A Practice of Place brings together a selection of paintings and mixed-media works by Cuban American artist Lilian Garcia-Roig. The exhibition traces the evolution of her sustained engagement with landscape, revealing how close observation, material experimentation, and lived experience have shaped a practice rooted in place. From the subtropical environments of South Florida to the limestone valleys of Cuba, Garcia-Roig’s work invites viewers to experience landscape as something inhabited rather than simply observed.

A recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, Garcia-Roig is recognized as one of the leading voices in contemporary landscape painting. Together, the works on view offer a compelling survey of an artistic practice that continues to evolve while remaining deeply connected to the environments that inspire it. Curated by Sophie Bonet, Chief Curator, The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery. Hyphenated Encounters will be on view at The Frank in the Main Gallery from September 17, 2026, through January 17, 2027. Deering Estate Residency: Lilian Garcia-Roig, Site, and the Labor of Belonging

Part of the Deering Estate AT program, this exhibition features Lilian Garcia-Roig, who is widely recognized as an on-site painter, though the term only begins to describe her practice. Rather than painting a landscape from a distance, Garcia-Roig paints directly with it, treating each location as a living field of negotiation between memory, perception, and presence. Over time, the tropical landscape has become essential to her visual language. Florida’s banyans, mangroves, sabal palms, and strangler figs offer a natural vocabulary that speaks to her Cuban heritage, one built on entanglement rather than hierarchy, and on lateral growth and survival rather than singular dominance.

During her 2024 residency at the Deering Estate, Garcia-Roig immersed herself in the property’s own tangled terrain, working directly on-site. The resulting body of work reflects a sustained, site-specific engagement, continuing her long practice of letting the landscape shape the painting rather than the other way around. Complementing Garcia-Roig’s work, an exclusive short film created by fellow Artist-in-Residence Jorge Gonzalez Graupera deepens the viewer’s connection to these themes. Bruna Marcon Weber

Discord and Serenity

Discord and Serenity brings together the work of Joy Johnson and Bruna Marcon Weber, two Barry University MFA students whose analog photographic practices explore the complex interior worlds that exist beneath the surface of everyday life. Working through staged environments, personal objects, domestic spaces, and analog processes, Johnson and Marcon Weber consider how emotions and desires are internalized, concealed, and ultimately expressed. Their photographs transform familiar spaces and objects into sites of psychological inquiry, revealing the tensions between what is visible and what remains hidden, between composure and release, and between the identities we inhabit publicly and the experiences we carry within. In What Can the Space in a Room Hold?, Johnson approaches the subconscious as an interior space—one populated by objects, memories, associations, and aspects of the self that may be revealed or kept behind a closed door. Through personal objects and environments, her photographs invite viewers to consider what their own internal spaces might contain.

Marcon Weber’s Rare Opportunities to Be Alone turns toward the domestic sphere, examining suppressed anger, emotional restraint, and the often-unseen pressures associated with caregiving, family life, and reproductive and domestic labor. Using staged color photographs made on 120 film, she reimagines familiar rooms and household objects as expressions of emotions that are ordinarily contained. Together, the two bodies of work create a dialogue between discord and serenity, asking what happens when private emotions enter visible space—and what photography can reveal about the parts of ourselves that are difficult to articulate. Curated by RemiJin Camping. Discord and Serenity will be presented in The Frank Third Space from September 17, 2026, through January 17, 2027. The CAMP Gallery: “Swathed In Color, Line, and Stitches” a group exhibition featuring Brittany Clifford, Evelyn Politzer, Gabrielle Torres and Eden Quispe

Swathed in Color, Line and Stitches is The CAMP Gallery’s summer exhibition bringing together artists: Brittany Clifford, Evelyn Politzer, Gabrielle Torres and Eden Quispe. Looking more at what brings us together each artist tells stories, weaves connections through their varied mediums. Sharing their individual cares these artists offer respite from chaos and invite the viewer into the tranquility of their individual practices brought on through palette and line, all held together by the artist’s wish. 

Line work is often attributed to the work of abstract artists, working on canvas and with paint - which is clearly seen in the works of local artist: Brittany Clifford. Interestingly though, Clifford softens her line, adds a curve to it - suggesting a different path than that which is the standard - beginning, end. Clifford’s lines allow for distraction, imagination and mirrors the ‘ups and downs’ of a day. Her colors also become unified symphonies of joy, mixing and melding, combining and connecting hues and tones heralding one to enter the mix. The physicality of her work also suggests the need to resolve unidentified conflicts - for example, the initial conflict is the canvas itself - standing resolute in its blank state. Clifford approaches this barricade with confidence and a notion of rebellion in that she conquers the canvas, breaks some rules along the way, and ends up with her voice, her vision standing where once their was emptiness. The next, and maybe the most confounding conflict an artist faces is their voice - and how can it be heard by someone else. Clifford overcomes this obstacle by keeping meaning, externally fluid, while intimately personal - showing the connections of human experience. We do not need to experience exactly what the artist paints to be affected by the work. 

Evelyn Politzer

Evelyn Politzer in her series focused on the sea, takes fiber and creates lines that ripple through the work. Her work stimulates one back to shorelines, absorbing the rush of the surf, while imagining the underneath, while just being. Politzer stitches together individual threads into a swath of imagination, heralding and opening the doors to “be-ingness.” In the series, the idea of becoming whole by approaching the work, overshadows the moment by encouraging the viewer to step outside of the the lines. The lines in the work both stand alone, but also are highly reliant on the other - creating an amphibious nuance of interdependency. Politzer, stands comfortably in the unconscious, while simultaneously rooted in higher consciousness - embracing this duality is key to the method behind interpretation. 

Stitching lines and weaving resolutions Gabrielle Torres creates living, breathing swathes of color, texture, line, and of course, stitches. Taking deep colors, symbolic and rich, Torres brings together not only her lines, but the lines of the environment around her, as well as the rhythm of life. Her works speaks to a universal reliance on co-existence and memory. The Wilton Street Rhythm  Series, speaks and begins from a marriage of memory and music to where it expands beyond the artist’s original intent. Fusing the creation of the work with blues, Torres interprets the music, and her reaction thus creating almost a web of feeling bound through thread and jazz. 

Using fabric, stitches and color, Eden Quispe tells stories not unique to her alone. Creating pages of life Quispe flips through the stages: from childhood to adulthood, to caring and protecting childhood, and her life and family in stories. Taking on the role of a chronicler Quispe shares to stimulate memory both lived and hoped for into glimpses of moments. Naturally these moments are defined and described by the artist, but the universality of her topic welcomes the viewer to step towards this same universality. Key to Quispe’s execution is that of memory and protection - preserving both motherhood and childhood in today’s contemporary world, she aims to explore and expose both chaos and peace, ultimately finding balance in her artistic expression. 

As a whole, when brought together, the artists and their works in this exhibition, explore, from different plaines the connection we all share, the dependence not only of self, but on each other. Reaching from the internal, the daily, and the environment - the art presents an unification of difference, that when all is said and done, is that which makes society. The exhibition asks us all to come together and relish the components that will leave us with the expectation of welcoming each other, recognizing the universal of being human; being besieged by conflict, embraced by lived experience, and united by both.

Monumentalizing the Trace presents the first solo exhibition by the collaborative artist duo TREIZMAN + ZURILLA, formed by Miami-based artists Denise Treizman and Julia Zurilla, on view at The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery from May 14 through August 29, 2026. Conceived as a continuous installation that unfolds across the gallery, the exhibition transforms the space into an immersive environment where image, material, and architecture converge. Art lovers and the community are invited to attend the Opening Reception for Monumentalizing the Trace on Thursday, May 14th from 6–9pm at The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery. This event is free & open to the public, located at 601 City Center Way in Pembroke Pines, Florida 33025.

Working across video, sculpture, and spatial intervention, Treizman and Zurilla construct a dynamic dialogue between analog and digital processes, presence and absence, permanence and impermanence. Familiar elements appear displaced and reconfigured, inviting viewers to reconsider the ways objects, images, and fragments accumulate meaning over time. Rather than presenting the monument as a fixed symbol of permanence, the artists shift attention toward the trace—the fragment, the remainder, the subtle evidence of transformation. In doing so, Monumentalizing the Trace proposes that what endures after change—the residual mark, the fleeting image, the material echo—may itself become a form of monument.

The collaboration between Treizman and Zurilla emerged from a shared interest in tension, contradiction, and material interplay as generative forces. What began as an experimental encounter during Stile Tale at Satellite Art Show in 2023 has evolved into an ongoing artistic investigation into how two distinct practices can remain intact while producing a shared visual language. Their work embraces paradox as a creative engine, placing opposites in productive relation: material and immaterial, analog and digital, fragility and structure, excess and restraint.

This investigation has taken form in immersive installations such as Coincidentia Oppositorum (2023), DREAMCATCHER (infinity loop) (2024), and Luminous Vacancy (2025). Through these environments, TREIZMAN + ZURILLA approach collaboration not as fusion, but as a dynamic space where difference becomes the catalyst for new aesthetic and conceptual territories.

Denise Treizman (Santiago, Chile) is a Miami-based artist whose practice combines repurposed materials, handcrafted elements, and remnants of mass consumption to create immersive sculptural installations. Her work explores systems of accumulation, transformation, and material memory. Treizman has presented solo exhibitions at institutions including the Wiregrass Museum of Art, Coral Springs Museum of Art, and Tiger Strikes Asteroid Chicago, and has participated in group exhibitions throughout the United States and internationally. She has completed residencies at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, MASS MoCA, and NARS Foundation, among others. Recent recognitions include the South Florida Cultural Consortium Award (2024), the Oolite Arts Ellies Creator Award (2025), and the No Vacancy Public Art Award (2025). She holds an MFA from the School of Visual Arts and is a resident artist at Laundromat Art Space in Miami.

Julia Zurilla (Caracas, Venezuela) is a Miami-based multidisciplinary artist whose work explores themes of memory, displacement, and belonging. Working with 8 mm film, digital video, photography, and generative text, she constructs fragmented narratives that move fluidly between analog and digital worlds. Zurilla has received several awards, including The Ellies Cinematic Award (2025), the Green Space Miami Open Call Award (2025), and the No Vacancy Public Art Award (2024). Her work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including Galería de Arte Nacional (Venezuela), MAC Lima (Peru), Coral Gables Museum, CIFO Miami, and Americas Society in New York, and is held in several private and institutional collections. She holds a BFA and MFA from IUESAPAR and is a resident artist at Laundromat Art Space.

Luján Candria

Miami-based Argentine artist Luján Candria works across a wide range of media to create introspective works that explore memory, reminiscence, and oblivion. Luján often uses the repetition and juxtaposition of images to create intimate and poetic narratives imbued with nostalgia.

Sterling Rook

Miami-based artist Sterling Rook works across sculpture and fiber, using materials such as forged steel, handmade rope, and organic elements to explore ancestry, craft, and material memory. Drawing from a lineage of textile and fiber traditions on both sides of his family, Rook approaches art-making as both a generative and regenerative process, connecting personal and cultural histories across time.

The Contemporary Art Modern Project (CAMP) Gallery presents Under the Red Tent, an immersive fiber exhibition

 

The Contemporary Art Modern Project (CAMP Gallery) is currently running an incredible exhibition in collaboration with Red Thread Art Studio Miami, Under The Red Tent, an immersive fiber exhibition that brings together artists whose practices engage thread and textile as tools of storytelling, connection, and resistance. Red Thread Art Studio Miami was founded by fiber artist Aurora Molina. Under The Red Tent will be on view through Sunday, April 26th.

In alignment with The CAMP Gallery’s emphasis on participation and dialogue, Under The Red Tent incorporates a living oral-history archive that unfolds throughout the exhibition. The exhibition’s themes echo the novel The Red Tent by Anita Diamant, where the red tent becomes a physical sanctuary for women to gather during menstruation and childbirth, as a symbol of feminine community, strength, and generational wisdom.

Edison Peñafiel

The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery in Pembroke Pines presents two new concurrent solo exhibitions, which opened on Thursday, January 29, 2026, offering audiences distinct yet resonant contemporary perspectives through immersive installation, video, and material-driven practices. ‘Habitar una nube’, (To Inhabit a Cloud), a solo exhibition by Argentine artist Adrián Sosa, and ‘Me pongo el sol al hombro y el mundo es amarillo‘ (I Carry the Sun on My Shoulder and the World Turns Yellow), a large-scale installation by multidisciplinary artist Edison Peñafiel. Art lovers and the community are warmly invited to attend the Opening Reception for both exhibitions on Thursday, January 29th from 6–9pm at The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery. This event is free & open to the public, offering an opportunity to experience both exhibitions in a shared moment of exploration and conversation. Edison Peñafiel

In Habitar una nube (“To Inhabit a Cloud”), Sosa draws from the rural landscapes and labor histories of Tucumán, Argentina, where smoke, dust, and suspended matter shape everyday life. Through video, sculptural elements, and performative action, the exhibition is grounded in material presence and lived experience, approaching labor as a bodily condition rather than a symbolic subject. The works unfold through gesture, repetition, and duration, creating an atmosphere of density and suspension. The cloud functions not as metaphor, but as environment—something inhabited, breathed, and endured. Viewers are invited into a phenomenological encounter with territory, memory, and the body as they register through time and material. Adrian Sosa: Habitar una nube (To Inhabit a Cloud) is curated by Sophie Bonet, Chief Curator, and presented by The Frank C. Ortis Gallery in partnership with Ceibo Gallery in collaboration with Pabellón 4 Arte Contemporáneo and Fulana Galería.

Adrián Sosa

Adrián Sosa (ARG, 1994) was born in Monteros, Tucumán, Argentina, where he lives and works. He holds a degree in Visual Arts from the Universidad Nacional de Tucumán and has completed advanced studies in cultural management and artist programs at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella. His practice, developed since 2017, has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Premio Braque (2023), which supported a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. Sosa has presented solo exhibitions in Argentina and participated in exhibitions and fairs in Argentina, France, and Peru, including Pinta PArC Lima. His work has been featured in national salons and performance festivals, and is held in public and private collections in Argentina and Brazil. Rooted in family history and rural labor traditions, his work engages territory, materiality, and embodied memory as forms of lived knowledge.

In Edison Peñafiel’s Me pongo el sol al hombro y el mundo es amarillo (I Carry the Sun on My Shoulder and the World Turns Yellow), the exhibition features a large-scale installation composed of suspended painted curtains that shape the gallery into a space of movement, pause, and shifting perspective. As visitors walk through the work, scenes unfold gradually—figures resting, departing, and lingering in moments of transition. Rather than offering a single point of view, the installation encourages viewers to slow down, wander, and experience the work through their own movement. Color, scale, and material create a rhythmic environment that invites reflection on presence, memory, and the experience of carrying forward. *Made possible with support from the Broward County Cultural Division.

Edison Peñafiel (b. 1985, Guayaquil, Ecuador) is a multidisciplinary artist whose large-scale installations explore themes of movement, power, memory, and perception. After immigrating to the United States in 2002, his work has increasingly reflected on the emotional and historical conditions that shape contemporary life. Peñafiel’s installations combine painting, sculpture, video, and sound, often drawing from German Expressionism and cinematic language to create psychologically charged environments. His work has been exhibited at institutions including the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, Coral Springs Museum of Art, Sabrina Amrani Gallery, and the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo 2 de Mayo (CA2M) in Madrid. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including a VIA Art Fund Production Grant, the Knight Foundation Award and Florida Prize in Contemporary Art, the Ellies Creator Award, and the Premio ARCO Comunidad de Madrid. His work is held in the collections of Oolite Arts, Elsewhere Museum, and CA2M.
