Documentation of Refik Anadol's 'Unsupervised' — Machine Hallucinations — MoMA

Unsupervised — Machine Hallucinations — MoMA - Refik Anadol Studio

Unsupervised is part of Machine Hallucinations, Refik Anadol Studio’s ongoing project exploring data aesthetics based on collective visual memories. Since the inception of the project in 2016, Anadol has utilized machine intelligence as a collaborator of human consciousness, specifically DCGAN, PGAN, and StyleGAN algorithms trained on vast datasets to unfold unrecognized layers of our external realities. Anadol and his team collect data from digital archives and publicly available resources, and process these datasets with machine-learning classification models. As a masterfully curated multi-channel experience, Machine Hallucinations brings a self-regenerating element of surprise to the audience and offers a new form of sensorial autonomy via cybernetic serendipity.

This video documents 1 min 18 seconds of Unsupervised — Machine Hallucinations — MoMA (2022), one of the three works in "Refik Anadol: Unsupervised" at MoMA, which continuously unfolds in real time, it was on view at the museum through April 15, 2023. The AI-based abstract images and shapes that result from the machine’s unsupervised learning of modern art are dictated by the Museum’s collection archive, weighted toward the special exhibition of new artworks at MoMA. The AI data pigmentation, in turn, captures the movement in the latent space created by autonomous machine hallucinations. Each data connection is driven by an edge-detection algorithm and colorized by the density of its previous and next latent coordinates. In other words, the machine allows the artist to trace its “unconscious decisions,” in a network of intricate and poetic connections.

Renowned South Florida artist Ernesto Kunde is best known for transforming the mangroves, wild birds, and crackled Deco architecture of Miami in his work.

‘Looproot’ (2016), Acrylic on Linen, 36″ x 36″ from Ernesto Kunde's acclaimed Mangrove Series

Renowned South Florida artist Ernesto Kunde is best known for transforming the mangroves, wild birds, and crackled Deco architecture of Miami in his work. He displays a keen eye for interpreting his tropical surroundings, the vital elements of Miami as a natural and urban biosphere are omnipresent in his work – sometimes appearing on linen, or cuts of canvas, found wood, and on corrugated aluminum. Kunde infuses his work with highly saturated, contrasting tones with completely opaque shadow. Color gradients and differentials are just barely visible beneath intense layers of paint. He paints on a diverse range of surfaces, such as found wood, canvas, and steel. Kunde also creates sculptural works and suspended installations.

#ArtistSpotlight: Laurence Gartel "The Father of Digital Art"

Digital Titan Laurence Gartel. Photographed by Sunman.

When we mention the name Laurence Gartel, we are talking about a figure within the art world that has pretty much seen everything. From the heady days of Studio 54 and bumping into the likes of Truman Capote through to being the frontrunner in the art-car phenomenon. Gartel’s work has been featured in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, MoMA The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and The Lucca Museum in Italy. Laurence Gartel has created works of art for The Coca-Cola Company, the National Basketball Association, Absolut Vodka, and he was the official artist of the 57th Grammy Awards, and was also featured in Apple’s famous “Think Different” ad just to name a few. Hailed as the first graphic artist of the digital age, Gartel stands at the top of his artistic niche as the acknowledged “Father of Digital Art”. He created his first piece of digital art in 1975 at Media Study Buffalo in upstate New York and also created the first digital ad for Absolut Vodka utilizing the first digital camera by Canon. Check out one of Gartel's iconic T-shirts from Limitato. Having collaborated with some of the best-known artists and photographers in the world – in this case, pioneering digital artist Laurence Gartel – the brand specializes in the production of wearable artworks, asking that the same amount of attention is given to its clothes as you would give when walking around a gallery. Mindy Solomon Gallery is pleased to present Splintered, a two-person exhibition focused on the dynamic, colorful, space shattering works of Ali Smith and Virginia Leonard; envelope pushing artists with a penchant for explosive use of bright pigment. Ali Smith has long been a proponent of neon. For her current exhibition she appears to embrace it in many of her works. In her artist statement she discusses her journey with painting: "In developing my own personal language of abstraction for the past 20 years, I continue to seek ways to Find invention and liberation in painting. I make large scale, colorful, multi- layered canvases that lure the viewer into a world of complexity and chaos. I make paintings that I hope challenge and engage the viewer directly, as an overall complex viewing experience."

Mindy Solomon is also pleased to present a trio of gallery artists working primarily in the medium of clay. Pushing the boundaries of abstract expressionism through surface and form, each artist brings a unique perspective to the reasons behind their work and the resulting objects. Francie Bishop Good discusses her journey to this current exhibition: "Working in clay has opened doors to a magical and quirky world. What seemingly started as a therapy to the tumultuous times, evolved into unconventional sculptures that act as both optimistic and protective forms."

Christo (born Christo Vladmirov Javacheff) and his wife and artistic collaborator Jeanne-Claude made an inestimable impact on the history of art since the mid-20th century. Together, they created large-scale, ephemeral, public art projects, involving dramatic interventions in carefully selected outdoor locations. With a career that spans nearly six decades, their work has helped to expand the definition of art beyond paintings and sculptures, envisioning instead a radically democratic art form capable of speaking directly to broad audiences across a full spectrum of society in public space.

This exhibition presents stellar works gifted to PAMM by Christo’s longtime friends Maria Bechily and Scott Hodes. These are fine examples of Christo’s drawing practice, which constitutes a pivotal aspect of his production. Christo and Jeanne-Claude declined all financial support from governments, institutions, single patrons, and foundations, choosing to fund their massive projects through the direct sales of drawings such as these. These works memorialize the projects and represent an alternative to the traditional funding structures for art. Collectively, the drawings exemplify an expansive overview of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s oeuvre, comprising their major projects spanning from the late 1960s to the early 2000s.

Organization and Support

Christo Drawings: A Gift from the Maria Bechily and Scott Hodes Collection is organized by former PAMM Curator María Elena Ortiz.
