Join NSU Art Museum Director and Chief Curator, Bonnie Clearwater, for this specially curated Travel À La Carte experience, which will offer an exciting opportunity to explore some of Los Angeles’ most celebrated museum destinations alongside fellow Curator Circle and Collector Circle members. From private tours and remarkable collections to fabulous dining, the museum looks forward to sharing a truly memorable experience with you. Enjoy docent-led tours of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s (LACMA) new building, the Getty Center, and Getty Villa, art galleries, and artist studios. Bonnie Clearwater, herself, will lead the tour of Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind at The Broad Museum, where she will provide first-hand information about Yoko’s work and personal life, as she presented the last retrospective at MOCA Miami. This trip also includes two group dinners (evening of August 24 at a restaurant and August 26 at a private residence in Pacific Palisades), lunches on excursion days (August 25, 26, 27), and luxury van transport for scheduled excursions. NSU Art Museum’s Travel À La Carte trips offer our Curator Circle/Collector Circle members the opportunity to make their own travel, accommodations, and dining arrangements. It is recommended that you book your lodgings in West Hollywood or the Beverly Hills area, as this is a convenient meeting point for the luxury van transport. Participants are responsible for arranging their own travel, accommodations, meals other than those specified as part of the excursions, and transportation, outside of scheduled programming, including personal outings and transportation to and from their individual accommodations and the airport.

NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale presents Creativity Exploration: Sweet Sculptures

 

Saturday, February 14th from 12:00 – 1:30pm NSU Art Museum presents Creativity Exploration: Sweet Sculptures. Inspired by Naomi Peterson’s sculptures of cake, bon bons, and confections, create your own sculptures to add some sweetness to your life. RSVP HERE.

Creativity Exploration adult workshops promote the benefits of material exploration and the mind-to-body experience. Studies have shown that 45 minutes of creative activity a day reduces stress and offers mental clarity and relaxation. In addition to producing a sense of well-being, sessions expand participants’ perceptions of forms while increasing brain connectivity through visual and cognitive stimulation. The workshop is led by educator Lark Keeler, a specialist in mindfulness education.

The Bass presents Third Thursdays: Miami Beach A Million Years Ago

 

Thursday, January 15th from 6–9pm enjoy 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀: 𝗠𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗶 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗮 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗔𝗴𝗼 at The Bass featuring Talk & Tour with Historian Malcolm Lauredo. Experience an immersive outdoor walking lecture that blends storytelling, mobile projections and archival discovery. Led by local historian Malcolm Lauredo, reimagine Miami and its beaches long before its iconic skyline and shores.

Take a deep dive into its geological and cultural past with a tour route around the museum block featuring wall projections that promise to bring historical findings to life. Concluding back inside the museum, guests are invited to explore the pop-up research tent of treasured articles, photographs, artifacts and more.

NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale is proud to announce a major gift from renowned Miami collector Martin Z. Margulies of genre-bending Pop artist George Segal’s sculpture Blue Girl on a Black Bench, 1977. Until its recent relocation to NSU Art Museum, this work was placed at the entrance to Margulies’s private residence for decades. Blue Girl on a Black Bench will have its NSU Art Museum premiere on November 16 in the exhibition The Riddle of the Sphinx Part II in conjunction with the public opening of the exhibition Robert Rauschenberg: Real Time.  Blue Girl on a Black Bench, 1977, features one of Segal’s uncanny plaster figures seated alone on a real New York City subway bench. The scene captures the fleeting vision Segal experienced of a young woman waiting on a subway platform before suddenly vanishing from his sight. Segal suggested the transience of this experience by painting only the girl’s left hand in flesh tones. The rest of her body is enveloped in a dream-like blue.

New at The Shop at The Bass, curated by Studio AF, Josh Aronson's 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 Photography Series

 

New at The Shop at The Bass, curated by Studio AF, Josh Aronson's 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 is a photographic series depicting young men from Miami's creative community on road trips across Florida, where overlooked landscapes set the stage for scenes of camaraderie and exploration.

Spring, a work from the series, debuted as Aronson's first public art installation and became the first city commission in Miami Beach history to win both the People's Choice Award and the Juror's Prize. To celebrate, Aronson created limited edition silk prints of Spring—a gesture toward a more playful, open vision of masculinity. Each edition includes a signed certificate of authenticity, a signed postcard, and a custom enclosure designed to sit neatly on a bookshelf.

About the artist: Josh Aronson (American, b. 1994, Toronto, Canada) is an artist based in Miami, Florida. His work explores masculinity in the American South through tableaux photographs that blend history, autobiography, and fiction. Drawing from Southern Gothic traditions and documentary archives, Aronson reimagines portrayals of young men in the region, emphasizing tenderness, camaraderie, and self-discovery.

Glackens Collection guides viewers through key moments from William Glackens’ history, beginning with his work as an illustrator for publications such as Collier’s: The National Weekly and The New York Herald, and his time as an artist reporter on the frontlines in Cuba during the War of 1898. A Backward Glance also sheds light on some of the lesser-known ways in which Glackens was central to the advancement of modern art in America, such as in his role as chair of the American art committee for the 1913 Armory Show, his contribution to the establishment of the Barnes Foundation Collection, and his position as first president of the Society of Independent Artists in 1917. This exhibition is curated by Ariella Wolens, Bryant-Taylor Curator at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. This exhibition is sponsored by The Sansom Foundation, Inc.

Artist Frank Stella, Master of Reinvention, Dies at 87. Works on Display at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale.

Frank Stella emerged as part of a generation of American artists excited by, driven and challenged by Abstract Expressionism. From his groundbreaking debut in the 1960's to his status as a living legend, Stella's artistic journey is a testament to innovation, experimentation, and boundless creativity, proving himself a master of reinvention.

Stella's impact extends far beyond the canvas. As a trailblazer in the art world, he inspired generations of artists to rethink the possibilities of abstraction and embrace visual storytelling's power. His bold experimentation with scale, shape, and dimension continues to shape the contemporary art landscape, leaving an indelible mark on art history. 

Bonnie Clearwater, Director and Chief Curator of NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale has been presenting Frank Stella's works since the late 90s and currently has his works on view at the Museum in Glory of the World: Color Field Painting (1950s to 1983). On view November 21, 2023 through August 25, 2024.

The exhibition’s title Glory of the World, takes its cue from Frank Stella’s writings on Hans Hofmann’s abstract painting Gloriamundi (1963): “Hofmann proved that the straightforward manipulation of pigment can create exalted art…Glory of the world this painting surely is, and glory of the world his painting surely was and is.” Like Hofmann, the monumental Color Field paintings in this exhibition arouse a sense of wonder and discovery.

Abby Modell is a widely collected and acclaimed glass artist. Her works were most recently featured at the iconic Bloomingdale’s 2023 Holiday Windows flagship store in NYC.

Featured from her new ‘Candy Collection’ are Lollipop sculptures and wall art, and the Sprinkled Pretzel. Also shown are vibrantly colored oversized handblown glass mirrored Zero Gravity Golf Balls. Glass assemblages using fire-polished and mirrored glass with Swarovski crystals create infinite reflections in the work.

Modell’s work has been exhibited at private homes, corporate collections and museums, including the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the world headquarters of Morgan Stanley in NYC, the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach, Canyon Ranch, Lenox, MA, the 1st International Biennale of Santorini, Greece, and the 1st International Heclectik-Art Glass Biennial in Portugal. Commissioned collections include the Bloomingdale’s Holiday Windows NYC, Royal Caribbean International’s Symphony of the Seas luxury cruise ship, and the Faberge Big Egg Hunt in NYC.
