Get in the Game: Sports, Art, Culture explores the dynamic interplay between athletic performance and artistic expression. Coinciding with major international sporting events taking place in Miami—the Miami Open, the Formula 1 Grand Prix, and the FIFA World Cup, the exhibition positions Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) as a site where global audiences converge to reflect on the cultural impact of sport. In a city shaped by exchange and diversity, the exhibition underscores how games and competitions create common ground across traditions, identities, and rivalries.

Featuring more than 100 works by artists from around the world—including highlights from PAMM’s collection—Get in the Game demonstrates how sport has inspired both personal expression and shared cultural memory. Visitors encounter Ernie Barnes’s soulful depictions of neighborhood basketball games, Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno’s cinematic meditation that follows French soccer star Zinedine Zidane’s in real time over the course of a match, and Tara Mateik’s reenactment of the historic 1973 “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. Artworks are presented alongside historic sports memorabilia—from 1970s Nike sneakers to original McLaren Racing steering wheels—revealing the intertwined histories of creativity, athleticism, and spectacle.

Ultimately, Get in the Game honors the resilience, energy, and imagination that define sports culture, while inviting visitors to consider how art reframes these themes across time and place. Immersive installations extend the experience beyond the visual, encouraging audiences to step into the arena.

Enjoy docent-led tours of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s (LACMA) new building, the Getty Center, and Getty Villa, art galleries, and artist studios. Bonnie Clearwater, herself, will lead the tour of Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind at The Broad Museum, where she will provide first-hand information about Yoko’s work and personal life, as she presented the last retrospective at MOCA Miami. This trip also includes two group dinners (evening of August 24 at a restaurant and August 26 at a private residence in Pacific Palisades), lunches on excursion days (August 25, 26, 27), and luxury van transport for scheduled excursions. NSU Art Museum’s Travel À La Carte trips offer our Curator Circle/Collector Circle members the opportunity to make their own travel, accommodations, and dining arrangements. NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale is proud to announce a major gift from renowned Miami collector Martin Z. Margulies of genre-bending Pop artist George Segal’s sculpture Blue Girl on a Black Bench, 1977. Until its recent relocation to NSU Art Museum, this work was placed at the entrance to Margulies’s private residence for decades. Blue Girl on a Black Bench will have its NSU Art Museum premiere on November 16 in the exhibition The Riddle of the Sphinx Part II in conjunction with the public opening of the exhibition Robert Rauschenberg: Real Time.  Blue Girl on a Black Bench, 1977, features one of Segal’s uncanny plaster figures seated alone on a real New York City subway bench. The scene captures the fleeting vision Segal experienced of a young woman waiting on a subway platform before suddenly vanishing from his sight. Segal suggested the transience of this experience by painting only the girl’s left hand in flesh tones. The rest of her body is enveloped in a dream-like blue.

The Bass presents Nam June Paik: The Miami Years, a new exhibition featuring works by the Korean American visual artist. Nam June Paik: The Miami Years  offers a close examination of the little-known history of the artist’s life in Miami Beach while exploring the innovative ways he used communication and media technologies in his work. On view through August 16, 2024.

The Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami invites you to experience Welcome to Paradise! Victory Garden – Feb 8

The Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami invites you to experience Welcome to Paradise, a dynamic new commissioning program featuring temporary public art projects by local South Florida artists. This program invites artists to create ambitious and experimental art installations that activate MOCA’s Paradise Courtyard. The first season centers on artists working at the intersection of ecology and technology.

On view February 8 through June 25, 2023, visitors will be able to step into the Paradise Courtyard and discover Victory Garden, an interactive sculptural community garden created by Miami-based artist Emmett Moore. Drawing inspiration from victory gardens of the past, which were planted during wartime to supplement rations and boost morale, Moore’s Victory Garden connects the local community with contemporary art and encourages visitors to reflect on our relationship with the built environment.

Utilizing sustainable materials such as repurposed steel drums to form sculptural planters, Victory Garden will feature plants native to South Florida and the Caribbean such as Cuban oregano, collard greens, starfruit, bee balm and Everglades cherry tomatoes that will be harvested and shared. It will also include benches and solar-powered USB outlets for visitors to use.

 

About the Artist

Emmett Moore is a Miami-based artist and designer known for a technically rigorous interdisciplinary approach that challenges notions of functionality and fluctuates seamlessly between design and art. Moore’s work employs processes taken primarily from architecture and industrial design to examine the relationship between ecology and the built environment. Moore utilizes found forms of everyday objects to speak to the universality and timelessness of the utilitarian and quotidian, working with secondhand goods and modular systems to break down inherent hierarchies within the physical world, elevate the mundane, and demystify systems of value.

His work has been shown institutionally at the RISD Museum, the Frost Art Museum, the Miami Art Museum, the Bass Museum of Art, and is in the permanent collection of the Perez Art Museum Miami. He was the first Miami-based designer to exhibit a solo exhibition at Design Miami/. He is representedby Nina Johnson gallery in Miami, Fl. 

Moore’s work has been covered by Art in America, The Guardian, The Miami Herald, Cultured Magazine, Architectural Digest, Artsy and The Art Newspaper among others. Moore was named Miami New Times’ Best Visual Artist in 2015 and 2021.
