Katherine Fleming Katherine Fleming is the founder and director of Bridge Initiative, a nonprofit that unites art and science to create public art for environmental advocacy. Established in 2015 following Fleming’s transformative explorations in Antarctica—where she witnessed the stark impacts of climate change firsthand—Bridge Initiative operates at the intersection of creativity and conservation to inspire public engagement and action. Under Fleming’s leadership, Bridge has collaborated with artists, scientists, and change makers to develop immersive educational campaigns addressing environmental issues both locally and globally. Her current work includes supporting the establishment of the Biscayne Bay National Heritage Area, advancing cultural and ecological preservation in South Florida.  Fleming serves on the Board of Directors for the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation and as an advisor for The ReefLine, an underwater public art park and artificial reef. Her advocacy has fostered partnerships with leading artists and organizations including Michele Oka Doner, Carlos Betancourt, Coral Morphologic, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the University of Miami, Mission Blue, the Alaska Whale Foundation, Path of the Panther, and The Cultural Landscape Foundation, among others.

Ximena Caminos Ximena Caminos is a biocultural placemaker and systems artist who pioneers cultural–ecological models where art, science, and climate innovation meet. Her practice spans governance, collaboration, scientific alliances, ecological performance, community engagement, storytelling, and urban–ocean coexistence. She is the creator of REEFLINE, a new typology where art becomes habitat and cities learn to coexist with their oceans. Aside from being Founder and Artistic Director of REEFLINE, she is also President of BlueLab Preservation Society, and Chief Creative Officer of HoneyLab Creative, advancing culture as civic infrastructure. For two decades, Caminos has chaired major arts and design cultural masterplans across the Americas. She was Artistic Visionary Planner for The Underline, founder and Chair of Faena Art (Buenos Aires and Miami), Global Executive Creative Director and partner of the Faena Group, Chief Curator of the Faena Arts Center, and Founder of the Faena Prize for the Arts. She has served on the New Museum Leadership Council, is a founding member of the Guggenheim’s Latin American Circle, Advisor to Art Basel Cities, and is an XPrize Ambassador, recipient of the Knight Foundation Arts Challenge Award and the Arts Champion Award.

Join us on Free First Thursday, August 7, from 11 am - Noon or 1 - 5 pm to experience NSU Art Museum’s new VR Art program developed by Nova Southeastern University faculty and students from the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences. Experiment with painting in virtual reality in this session. This guided, free activity is available in English & Spanish, and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. The Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami invites you to experience Welcome to Paradise! Victory Garden – Feb 8

The Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami invites you to experience Welcome to Paradise, a dynamic new commissioning program featuring temporary public art projects by local South Florida artists. This program invites artists to create ambitious and experimental art installations that activate MOCA’s Paradise Courtyard. The first season centers on artists working at the intersection of ecology and technology.

On view February 8 through June 25, 2023, visitors will be able to step into the Paradise Courtyard and discover Victory Garden, an interactive sculptural community garden created by Miami-based artist Emmett Moore. Drawing inspiration from victory gardens of the past, which were planted during wartime to supplement rations and boost morale, Moore’s Victory Garden connects the local community with contemporary art and encourages visitors to reflect on our relationship with the built environment.

Utilizing sustainable materials such as repurposed steel drums to form sculptural planters, Victory Garden will feature plants native to South Florida and the Caribbean such as Cuban oregano, collard greens, starfruit, bee balm and Everglades cherry tomatoes that will be harvested and shared. It will also include benches and solar-powered USB outlets for visitors to use.

 

About the Artist

Emmett Moore is a Miami-based artist and designer known for a technically rigorous interdisciplinary approach that challenges notions of functionality and fluctuates seamlessly between design and art. Moore’s work employs processes taken primarily from architecture and industrial design to examine the relationship between ecology and the built environment. Moore utilizes found forms of everyday objects to speak to the universality and timelessness of the utilitarian and quotidian, working with secondhand goods and modular systems to break down inherent hierarchies within the physical world, elevate the mundane, and demystify systems of value.

His work has been shown institutionally at the RISD Museum, the Frost Art Museum, the Miami Art Museum, the Bass Museum of Art, and is in the permanent collection of the Perez Art Museum Miami. He was the first Miami-based designer to exhibit a solo exhibition at Design Miami/. He is representedby Nina Johnson gallery in Miami, Fl. 

Moore’s work has been covered by Art in America, The Guardian, The Miami Herald, Cultured Magazine, Architectural Digest, Artsy and The Art Newspaper among others. Moore was named Miami New Times’ Best Visual Artist in 2015 and 2021.

"Since 2008, I have been exhibiting as an artist during Art Basel Week at art fairs such as Art Miami.  I have noticed that social media has transformed our daily lives. In the first years of exhibiting, when viewers would come to the exhibit, they would ask to take photos with their phones. As the years progressed, fewer people would engage directly with the art. They instead use their phones as their lens to the world. Having observed this evolution, I thought it would be interesting to use my own iphone to film the viewers, so that I become an active participant, and we all become the 'Art'."

Artist & Filmmaker Cheryl Maeder's New Installation at Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute

Internationally collected Visual Artist and Filmmaker Cheryl Maeder is a pioneer of Art, Film and Technology. Experience Maeder's new installation of 'Far & Away I' at Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute in West Palm Beach.

Cheryl Maeder's photographs are in the permanent museum collection of The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum in Miami, exhibited internationally - The Musée du Louvre in Paris, SFMOMA San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Cooper Union in New York, Norton Museum of Art in Palm Beach and Cornell Art Museum in Delray Beach. Her work is exhibited at major art fairs, such as Art Miami, SCOPE Art Show, Art London and Art Shanghai, among others. Her work is also auctioned at Sotheby's, NY. She had a solo exhibition at Miami International Airport in 2015, and was recently selected by PBS for Project Filmmaker, South Florida, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. 

The artist/filmmaker has held numerous exhibitions and shows, and currently has framed video installations 'Frequency' & 'The Voyage' on view in the lobby of the GALLERYone Hotel, Hilton DoubleTree Suites in Fort Lauderdale. Video Installations take the viewer on a sensory interactive experience.
