The Riverwalk Connection

Submission dates: Monday, August 2 through Friday, October 2, 2026

Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale invites local artists to submit their original artwork depicting Fort Lauderdale’s Riverwalk and/or downtown and how the Riverwalk serves as a central connector in our community, geographically, socially, culturally or economically. Potential points of view include:

• “Riverwalk in Motion” (boats, people, festivals, wildlife)
• “Moments on the Riverwalk” (human experiences—events, quiet scenes, movement)
• “Riverwalk: Then, Now & Next” (past / present / future interpretations)

Artists are invited to submit two and three-dimensional original artwork of all mediums, including but not limited to watercolor, oil, sculpture, photography, charcoal, mixed media, drawing and gouache.

Following the submission deadline, artwork will be judged by a local juried panel, with the winning piece being featured on the cover of a future issue of Go Riverwalk Magazine.  Artists must be available to be photographed and interviewed for the story.

Addison Wolff: At the Baths

At the Baths marks the debut solo museum presentation of South Florida artist Addison Wolff (b. 1987, Winter Park, FL; lives and works in Fort Lauderdale) at NSU Art Museum. Wolff’s practice centers on his use of synthetic polymer paints on bisque-fired ceramics, with which he creates layered, hybrid works that merge sculpture and painting, inviting reflection on the human impulse for definition and the process of identity formation. For this presentation, Wolff’s abstract ceramic vessels will be presented within a site-specific installation inspired by communal bathhouse architecture. The exhibition draws from classical references such as the ancient Greek fresco, The Tomb of the Diver, and invites consideration of the contemporary manifestation of bathhouses. As Wolff challenges the traditional boundaries of material and meaning, the exhibition highlights the boundless potential of abstraction as a form of personal and collective expression.

NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale is proud to announce a major gift from renowned Miami collector Martin Z. Margulies of genre-bending Pop artist George Segal’s sculpture Blue Girl on a Black Bench, 1977. Until its recent relocation to NSU Art Museum, this work was placed at the entrance to Margulies’s private residence for decades. Blue Girl on a Black Bench will have its NSU Art Museum premiere on November 16 in the exhibition The Riddle of the Sphinx Part II in conjunction with the public opening of the exhibition Robert Rauschenberg: Real Time.  Blue Girl on a Black Bench, 1977, features one of Segal’s uncanny plaster figures seated alone on a real New York City subway bench. The scene captures the fleeting vision Segal experienced of a young woman waiting on a subway platform before suddenly vanishing from his sight. Segal suggested the transience of this experience by painting only the girl’s left hand in flesh tones. The rest of her body is enveloped in a dream-like blue.

Art duo, artists and sisters KX2 (Ruth Avra + Dana Kleinman) are known for their striking wall and freestanding sculpture together. From a distance, the work looks sleek and high contrast with hyper-pigmented painting and shiny metal. Yet, up close the viewer is struck by textural multilayered paintings inspired by natural surfaces. Their work has been featured in numerous museums and galleries across the United States and abroad. The art duo's work aims to create a moment of pause, inviting the viewer to escape the stresses of the day and find a space to achieve balance. In their most recent work, themes related to environmental issues are presented with the hope to raise an awareness of the fragility of our natural ecosystems.

The Frank Pembroke Pines presents The Crossings Movement Workshop on September 28th from 11am – 2pm

 

The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery in Pembroke Pines presents “The Crossings Movement Workshop” on Saturday, September 28th from 11am – 2pm. Move with choreographer Damaris Ferrer as she tells the story of “The Crossings”, and lead participants through their movement.

This workshop is part of “The Crossings: A Global Movement Experience”, a spectacular fall exhibition from September 12, 2024, through November 7, 2024 at the Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery in the City of Pembroke Pines. Amidst the constraints of physical and metaphysical borders, “The Crossings: A Global Movement Experience” transcends these limitations. Conceived by the visionary choreographer Damaris Ferrer, this project unfolds as a dynamic narrative that transcends traditional dance and performance, redefining the essence of communal storytelling through movement.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is pleased to announce the 2024 Art On The Plaza Artists: Yanira Collado, Christopher Mitchell, and Nicole Salcedo. This annual program, inaugurated in 2020, provides an opportunity for South Florida artists to engage with the museum and its community, employing MOCA’s front plaza as a platform to elevate their site-specific, temporary public art installations. “As part of our mission, we’re dedicated to showcasing the creative breadth and scholarship of Miami’s local artists while also providing opportunities for the community to access and engage with our city's vibrant arts scene,” said Chana Sheldon, MOCA Executive Director. “Over the years, MOCA has steadfastly supported local artists and fostered community engagement through accessible, free programming. Offering programs like Art on the Plaza is a core tenet to that ongoing commitment.” The three installations will be sequentially displayed at MOCA throughout the year, offering visitors an opportunity to engage with a variety of themes, such as cultural identity and heritage, mythology and spirituality, nature and environment, and transformation through reflection.

NSU Art Museum in Fort Lauderdale: Glory of the World: Color Field Painting (1950s to 1983)

 

Glory of the World: Color Field Painting (1950s to 1983)
November 21, 2023 through June 30, 2024

This exhibition explores a tendency in mid-twentieth-century American abstract painting in which vast areas of color appear as the dominating force. Although this type of painting was prefigured in the work of previous generations of abstract painters, such as Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko, it is identified with artists including Frank Bowling, Helen Frankenthaler, Sam Gilliam, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski, Larry Poons. Frank Stella and Alma Thomas, among others. Color Field painting was but one of several art movements that emerged in America during the early 1960s, including Pop Art, Minimalism, Op Art, Photorealism, hard-edge abstraction, and the Black Arts Movement, to name a few. Although critics tended to categorize the Color Field artists based solely on their shared formal characteristics, each artist approached their process from a distinct perspective, while maintaining an awareness of each other’s innovations.

The exhibition’s title Glory of the World, takes its cue from Frank Stella’s writings on Hans Hofmann’s abstract painting Gloriamundi (1963): “Hofmann proved that the straightforward manipulation of pigment can create exalted art…Glory of the world this painting surely is, and glory of the world his painting surely was and is.” Like Hofmann, the monumental Color Field paintings in this exhibition arouse a sense of wonder and discovery.

Curated by Bonnie Clearwater, Director and Chief Curator, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, the selection of paintings focuses primarily on the earlier years of Color Field beginning in the 1950s with Frankenthaler’s large stain paintings and ends 1983 when post-modern and imagist painters began to dominate the art scene. In recent years, another young generation of artists has rediscovered Color Field painting, which makes this exhibition especially timely. The exhibition will be augmented with a hard-cover, full-color book published by Skira.

Sri Prabha: Resonator - Reanimator at Boca Raton Museum of Art

Sri Prabha (b. 1969 Hyderabad, India; lives and works in Hollywood, FL) created a phenomenal site-specific multi-sensory installation at the Boca Raton Museum of Art that explores our connection to the natural world by commingling ideas from Vedic philosophy and science. His exhibition Resonator - Reanimator, is on view at the museum June 14 - October 22, 2023.

Abstract patterned digital projections sweep the walls, covering paintings and sculptures to create constantly shifting organic forms. Paired with audio of monks chanting, the overall feel is that of preparing the mind for meditation. Within the mind frame of meditation, visitors will see references to both the smallest and greatest elements of our universe.

Spiraling, pulsing amorphous shapes call to mind the view through a microscope, and twinkling flashes of light are reminiscent of a telescope’s sight. Melded together, they will create a psychedelic environment of saturated colors.

'Jerry' by internationally collected artist Gary Kroman, whose paintings are created using layered plexiglass with LED lights - pieces can be special made, custom ordered or choose from the artists extensive inventory. History Fort Lauderdale ‘Florida Everglades: River of Grass Reflections’ Summer Exhibition

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “Florida Everglades: River of Grass Reflections” from Sunday, July 2, through Sunday, September 10, 2023. The summer exhibit will include colorful impressionist fine art works by Tim Forman together with environmental photographs from History Fort Lauderdale’s archived collection. The exhibition can be viewed in the art space on the first level of the New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue).

Tim Forman is the third generation of Formans to have been born and reared in South Florida. He first picked up the brush at nine years old under the instruction of Peter Olsen. By 17, Forman was receiving commissions. Primarily a self-taught artist, Forman’s work is the result of dedicated practice. He uses field sketches, plein air paintings, and photographs to compose his pieces that are painted in layers with both knife and brush. He creates his landscapes to portray the splendor and simplicity of the natural world around us. Through his work, Tim seeks to lift the spirits and inspire awe above our day-to-day lives.

History Fort Lauderdale is proud to host a variety of engaging multicultural experiences, year-round. Permanent exhibits include “From Dugouts to Dream Yachts,” a visual narrative weaving the story of the ever-changing use of Fort Lauderdale’s waterways by following the strokes of the first people to today’s sightseers, “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” which allows visitors to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis, “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, plus “Archaeology of the New River” and a multitude of stories and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale. The nonprofit museum also hosts an artists’ collective collaborative space.
