The Bear’s Picnic by Diane Arrieta has been installed at City Hall Plaza in West Palm Beach, Florida - located at 401 Clematis Street. This commission was funded by Artlife West Palm Beach and the City of West Palm Beach.

Project description:

The Bear’s Picnic project is founded on the belief that all living beings on this planet - humans, animals, and the environment - are interconnected. With a focus on six of the eight bear species threatened with extinction due to human activities, the project aims to bring bears into our human environment and share a meal, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility.

Food is a vital aspect of our daily lives, and meals have always been a cornerstone of family life. The picnic provides an opportunity for reflection, storytelling, and learning, with people interacting with the bears in a safe and respectful environment.

In creating the project, a combination of handcrafted items and altered, commercially produced bears and picnic tables are used. This symbolism highlights the way in which wildlife and nature are commodified and exploited for human needs, often with little understanding of the intricate and interdependent relationships between all living beings.

Bears have often been used as decorations for lawns or as selfie props for businesses, perpetuating the idea of wildlife as mere ornaments or products. Through the recontextualization of bears in this project, their importance and value in the natural world are emphasized, highlighting the lost connection between humans and the environment.

Palm Beach County (August 30, 2021)- Hispanic Heritage Month at The Box Gallery will be celebrated with eye opening exhibition spotlighting the delicate and vulnerable eco-system of Colombia and a series of presentations, an art salon celebrating works by artists representing the Latin America, workshops, book readings and much more throughout the next two months for all to enjoy.  

The Box Gallery, located at 811 Belvedere Road in West Palm Beach, has partnered with Latin American Arte in a joint effort to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month by presenting Environment Work, an international exchange exhibition of paintings by Colombian artist Moisés Morales Duque, in West Palm Beach. The first of five in a series events, the exhibit opens with a reception on September 25, 2021 from 7-9 PM and continues though October 30, 2021.

Artist Skip Hartzell creates large oil paintings, works on paper and four-legged sculptures inspired by man’s best friend

South Florida artist Skip Hartzell is known locally as “the dog artist”. He is a longtime supporter of no-kill animal rescues and donates proceeds from the sale of his artworks to animal-rescue, no kill shelters. The artist creates large oil paintings, works on paper and four-legged sculptures inspired by man’s best friend.

His inspiration comes in the form of a morning walk, accompanied by a furry friend. The canine-inspired artworks that he creates are figments of his artistic imagination and creative vision. Hartzell creates directly from his emotions and instincts, his work is inspired by dogs of all shapes, sizes and varieties. He is best known for his unique sculptures recognized immediately by their distinct form and style only Hartzell can produce.

“The sculptures are partly abstract with lanky legs and floppy ears and body postures that tell shaggy dog stories. He has created his own kind of material, mixing resin and paper mache onto a wire frame then coating it with paints, clay, and wax until he achieves the surface he wants. He likes the surface to look ‘beat up’. When it’s finally done he stamps it with a small red heart as his signature,” said art writer & art critic Sandra Schulman of Hartzell’s dog sculptures in West Palm Beach Magazine.

“The texture is so important because the tactile experience of sculpture is so primal for me,” he says. “You grab with your hands and just start to mush things together and get your fingers on the materials, and there is just such a richness to the feel.” He says whenever he’s doing a show, he is quick to hand his sculptures to the patrons so they can enjoy the feeling, too. And whether it’s paint on canvas or sculpture, the texture is one of the most captivating and inviting parts of experiencing his artwork.
