CALL FOR BROWARD TEEN ARTISTS FOR ANNUAL STUDENT EXHIBITION AT NSU ART MUSEUM

Memory Soup is an exhibition of artwork in all media including performance-based and spoken word by Broward County teens curated by student members of NSU Art Museum’s Teen Art Council, which highlights the unique perspectives and experiences of teens across Broward County. Teens are invited to exhibit their artwork with their peers in NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale and engage with the greater community of Broward County.

Submission Guidelines The submission period is open through 5 pm on March 1 Drop-off time for physical pieces of art is March 11 – March 29 at NSU Art Museum (One East Las Olas Blvd., Ft. Lauderdale, 33301) Applicants must be aged 13 to 19 years and must be attending high school in Broward County All mediums are encouraged, including visual art, dance, music, writing, and performance. There is a maximum of 3 submissions per artist, and all artwork must be recent work made within the student’s high school term. All submissions must be submitted through the online form or by emailing Education1@nova.edu.

Experience the Opening Reception of “Ephemeral Construct” at The Frank on February 8th

 

A new exhibition called “Ephemeral Construct” is opening at the Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery from February 8, 2024, through May 18, 2024. All ages are welcome to attend an Opening Reception on Thursday, February 8th from 6 – 9pm at The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery, located at 601 City Center Way. This Event is Free & Open to the Public, RSVP here.

The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery in the City of Pembroke Pines presents Ephemeral Construct, a free exhibition weaving together art, ecology, and the fleeting nature of existence, bringing together the works of four South Florida Artists – Nathalie Alfonso, Sharon Lee Hart, Alejandra Abad, and Deborah Perlman. Each artist presents a unique perspective on the transient nature of our world, encouraging viewers to contemplate the ephemeral constructs of our physical and conceptual environments.

here will be a variety of artistic mediums to enjoy including sculptures, portraits, mixed media, animations, and more to explore for those in attendance. The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery is a two story art gallery named after Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis for his decades-long commitment to the cultural arts. Lovingly known as ‘The Frank,’ this contemporary art gallery showcases multidisciplinary inclusive exhibitions that foster connections, facilitate collaborations and initiate cultural change. Laurence Gartel: Known as ‘The Father of Digital Art’, Gartel’s vision was to create electronic images, capture them with a still camera off a monitor as there were no saving devices or software to store the created picture. He saw these images as works of Art that would eventually replace painting. In 1985 he delivered the keynote speech at the First Pan Pacific Computer Conference in Melbourne, Australia predicting the future of the world, which landed him on the front page of “The Australian” Newspaper. This was the same year he taught Andy Warhol how to use the Amiga Computer to create the album cover for Debbie Harry (Blondie.) It was a moment when “Pop Art met Digital Art.” In 1991, he produced his famous ABSOLUT GARTEL ad for Absolut Vodka. Gartel had a feature exhibition at the Norton Museum of Art, and in 2009 he received the Palm Beach Photographic Centre’s prestigious FOTOmentor Award. In his 40+ year career he created artwork for the 57th Annual Grammy Awards; Newport Jazz Festival; NASA; Monaco International Film Festival; Feature of the 113th New York International Auto Show; Oslo Motor Show Norway and much more.

Glory of the World: Color Field Painting (1950s to 1983)
November 21, 2023 through June 30, 2024

This exhibition explores a tendency in mid-twentieth-century American abstract painting in which vast areas of color appear as the dominating force. Although this type of painting was prefigured in the work of previous generations of abstract painters, such as Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko, it is identified with artists including Frank Bowling, Helen Frankenthaler, Sam Gilliam, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski, Larry Poons. Frank Stella and Alma Thomas, among others. Color Field painting was but one of several art movements that emerged in America during the early 1960s, including Pop Art, Minimalism, Op Art, Photorealism, hard-edge abstraction, and the Black Arts Movement, to name a few. Although critics tended to categorize the Color Field artists based solely on their shared formal characteristics, each artist approached their process from a distinct perspective, while maintaining an awareness of each other’s innovations.

The exhibition’s title Glory of the World, takes its cue from Frank Stella’s writings on Hans Hofmann’s abstract painting Gloriamundi (1963): “Hofmann proved that the straightforward manipulation of pigment can create exalted art…Glory of the world this painting surely is, and glory of the world his painting surely was and is.” Like Hofmann, the monumental Color Field paintings in this exhibition arouse a sense of wonder and discovery.

Curated by Bonnie Clearwater, Director and Chief Curator, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, the selection of paintings focuses primarily on the earlier years of Color Field beginning in the 1950s with Frankenthaler’s large stain paintings and ends 1983 when post-modern and imagist painters began to dominate the art scene. In recent years, another young generation of artists has rediscovered Color Field painting, which makes this exhibition especially timely. The exhibition will be augmented with a hard-cover, full-color book published by Skira.

“Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids”

Experience larger-than-life creatures at HistoryMiami Museum and its feature exhibition, Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids. Mythic Creatures traces the roots of some of the world’s most enduring mythological creatures from Asia, Europe, the Americas, and even how Miamians embrace their own mythic fantasies. On display through March 31, 2024, it encourages visitors to investigate for themselves how cast fossils of prehistoric animals could have, through misidentification, speculation, fear, or imagination, inspired the development of some legendary creatures.                  

Visitors will come face-to-face with a 17-foot-long dragon with a wingspan of over 19 feet, a giant Kraken sea monster with 12-foot-long tentacles, a 10-foot-long unicorn, 120-foot-long Chinese Parade dragon, and an over-6-foot-tall, extinct primate called Gigantopithecus. Each item featured brings to life ways in which myths could have had their beginning, capturing the imagination of every child. 

The exhibition offers numerous interactive stations and activities for every age group.  Hours are:  Wednesday – Saturday: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sunday: noon –  5 p.m.; Christmas and New Year’s Eve from noon – 5 p.m.

Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids is organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York (amnh.org), in collaboration with Australian National Maritime Museum, Sydney; Canadian Museum of History, Gatineau-Ottawa; Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Atlanta; and The Field Museum, Chicago.

Glass assemblages using fire-polished and mirrored glass with Swarovski crystals create infinite reflections in the work.
