Four Rooms: Selections from ICA Miami’s Permanent Collection

“Four Rooms” on view at The Institute of Contemporary Art Miami (ICA Miami) assembles a suite of four exhibitions comprising works from the museum’s permanent collection, each organized by one of the museum’s curators, with a focus on recent acquisitions. The resulting presentations, which take the form of vignettes, demonstrate both the diversity and the historical depth of ICA Miami’s collection. The exhibition continues the museum’s ongoing approach to generating dialogue between newly commissioned works and works from the last fifty years and expresses the global scope of ICA Miami’s collection.
Spirit Matter, curated by Donna Honarpisheh, Associate Curator, Art + Research, brings together diverse experimentations with material that transform matter into portals of spiritual encounter across global contexts. In an exhibition dedicated to grisaille, Gean Moreno Director, ICA Miami’s Art + Research Center, presents works that are meditations on the body and its traces, where presence, memory, and identity emerge through black-and-white photography and subtle performative gestures. Associate Curator Amanda Morgan invites viewers to reflect on intimacy and one’s relationship to the spaces of everyday life. Her exhibition brings together works that feature emotionally laden domestic objects and built environments that imply presence without depicting the human form. Finally, Alex Gartenfeld, Artistic Director, highlights a concise presentation of the museum’s wide-ranging examples of minimalism, highlighting a recent major acquisition of work by Miriam Schapiro.

A Must-See in the Miami Design District, Urs Fischer: Bus Stop, 2017 - located at the Paradise Plaza Garage, 176 NE 41st Street in Miami, Florida 33137. Situated in the Miami Design District sits a new fountain by the artist Urs Fischer. Its backdrop is a re-creation of a Miami Beach bus stop with all its signage and advertisements missing. In its midst, on the bench, is a skeleton, lying on its back, inhabiting this artificial sphere of public space. A constant trickle of water lands on its head and forms a pool below. The skeleton figure is of no particular gender or age. It serves as a representation of anyone.

A Must-See in the Miami Design District, Katie Stout: Gargantua’s Thumb - located throughout the neighborhood, Miami, Florida 33137. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of Miami Design District’s Annual Design Commission, Katie Stout transforms the neighborhood with “Gargantua’s Thumb”, a series of sculptural benches that merge function, fantasy, and play. Stout brings a fantastical cast of furniture to life, including a dog and whale-shaped bench. Each piece begins as a small, hand-sculpted clay animal that is later digitally scanned and enlarged, encouraging people to rest, explore, and engage with their surroundings. Suspended from the trees, clusters of colorful orbs inspired by flora and fauna motifs transform the streets into a whimsical world of motion and wonder.
A Must-See in the Miami Design District, Ad Minoliti: Pink Spatial Microbiota, by appointment only - located at 3841 NE 2nd Ave. 400, Miami, Florida 33137. This site-specific installation reimagines the space of the stairwell as a digestive tube for the Buick building. “I was inspired by the digestive system that moves food through the body, and by thinking of these internal spaces as an ecosystem,” Minoliti described. Microbiota refers to the bacteria, viruses and fungi that are crucial for immunologic, hormonal, and metabolic balance of all multicellular organisms. “There are an estimated 100 billion bacteria in the human body. We can't live without them. We contain multitudes.”
A Must-See in the Miami Design District, Marc Newson's DASH Fence (2007) located at 4001 NE 2nd Avenue - Miami, FL 33137. The DASH Fence by designer Marc Newson is a 100-ft fence installation at the Design & Architecture High School (DASH), creating a compelling environmental structure in the heart of the Miami Design District. Based conceptually on waves, the design consists of a thin metal frame of 400 vertical fins of varying depths that create a series of changing patterns. The appearance of the fence shifts based on point of view—up close, the fence allows a full view into and out from the DASH courtyard. However, from a distance, the surface becomes fully opaque and appears to undulate as the viewer passes by.
A Must-See in the Miami Design District, Diamantina by The Campana Brothers (2008) Fernando and Humberto Campanalocated in the Lobby at 4141 NE 2nd Avenue - Miami, FL 33137. Winner of the 2008 Design Miami/ Designer of the Year Award. Fernando and Humberto Campana of Estudio Campana create singularly joyful and expressive designs that bridge handcraft, limited edition, and mass production, frequently using discarded and mundane materials. For Design Miami/ 2008 the Campana brothers created Diamantina using the native Brazilian plant Apui, which grows on and eventually chokes rainforest trees. This rattan-like fiber is woven around plastic garden chairs and other ready-made plastic objects, such as discarded toys, dolls, flip-flops, and tires. Like the rainforest trees, the man-made objects are almost entirely swallowed up by the organic material, symbolizing nature's triumph over the synthetic world. With Diamantina, the Campana brothers expanded on this concept by introducing native Brazilian amethyst crystals into the woven structure, creating a series of biomorphic islands that visitors were encouraged to sit on and explore.
A Must-See in the Miami Design District, Buckminster Fuller: Fly's Eye Dome 1979/80-2014, located at 140 NE 39th Street in Miami, Florida 33137, known as Palm Plaza. In 1965 Buckminster Fuller designed and patented the Fly’s Eye Dome, which he called an “autonomous dwelling machine”. Prototypes began to be built by hand in 1977, and by 1983 three of the fiberglass spheres in various sizes (12-foot, 24-foot, 50-foot) had been produced. Fuller died before he was able to realize his vision for the structure. However, almost 50 years later, the design, a Monohex variation of the geodesic dome, can clearly be seen as a forerunner of today’s green building movement. In 2011, collector Craig Robins acquired the 24-foot prototype to exhibit it and use it as inspiration for a key element of the Miami Design District. The following year, The Buckminster Fuller Institute, in partnership with Goetz Composites, ConformLab, and DRDesign, began the development of a program to complete Fuller’s vision, using advanced technologies and materials not available to Fuller in the 1970s. BFI was then commissioned to produce a Fly’s Eye Dome utilizing state-of-the-art materials, intelligence, and techniques, to be prominently incorporated in the Miami Design District.
A Must-See in the Miami Design District, Vortex (2014) by 2x4, located at NE 38th St. between NE 2nd Ave. and NE 1st Ave. Miami, FL 33137. Founded in 1994 by Michael Rock, Susan Sellers, and Georgianna Stout, 2x4 is a collaborative studio of designers, programmers, writers, and animators who work in visual media. As a studio, their project approach centers on critical thinking and research. As in their mural, “Vortex”, in the Miami Design District, this experimentation and research often culminate in bold graphic works that question the nature and conventions of design. Tasked with creating a piece for a perimeter wall, “Vortex” immediately draws the viewer in beckoning those who are curious to see what is on the other side.

Mindy Solomon Gallery specializes in contemporary emerging and mid-career artists and art advisory services. The gallery represents artists working in painting, sculpture, photography, and video in both narrative and non-objective styles.
