Fabien Castanier Gallery in Wynwood presents a dual exhibition, 'Rubber Time', featuring work by Andrew Schoultz and Mark Jenkins. Join us for the Opening Reception on Saturday, May 20th from 6-9pm. Both artists will present new work, paintings and sculptures. “Rubber Time” refers to an idiom from Indonesia that expresses the tendency for a relaxed and flexible perspective on punctuality and time-keeping. Schoultz and Jenkins apply this concept of “elastic time” to our current societal climate in the United States, seeing the present period as a suspended limbo with troubling unknowns both in the past and in the near future. Mark Jenkins, “Standing Reader”, life-size sculpture. Their work touches on political and cultural issues with dark humor and irony, reflecting on what they see as the development of a unique moment in history. Both of the artists often address societal issues that are not easy or comfortable to confront, but are relevant and necessary to reflect upon. While seeking out the dark corners of our current moment, Schoultz and Jenkins present the turmoil and anxiety with a tinge of hope for the future. Cintas Foundation Takes Historic Step To Allow For Artists In Cuba To Complete In Its Fellowship Awards Program

CINTAS FOUNDATION TAKES HISTORIC STEP TO ALLOW FOR ARTISTS IN CUBA TO COMPETE IN ITS FELLOWSHIP AWARDS PROGRAM

The CINTAS Foundation is pleased to announce that its Fellowship Program will now fulfill the original intent of its founder, Oscar B. Cintas, and offer Fellowships to Cubans and those of Cuban descent – regardless of whether they live in or outside of Cuba. In doing so, we are abiding by the purpose stated in the certificate of incorporation that created the CINTAS Foundation in 1957. The Board awards Fellowships in the categories of visual arts, music composition, creative writing and architecture & design and determines which Fellowships are awarded in any given year. This year the Foundation is offering three Fellowships in the amount of $20,000 each: the CINTAS–Knight Foundation Fellowship in Visual Arts; the CINTAS Foundation–Brandon Fradd Fellowship in Music Composition; and the CINTAS Foundation Fellowship in Architecture & Design. Competition applications are due by June 1, 2017.

“In keeping with the original mission of Oscar B. Cintas in 1957 to reward Cuban art anywhere in the world and, like other respected nonprofit institutions, we have decided to open our fellowship competitions to creators on the island. By taking this step, we have the possibility of boosting their careers as we have done and will continue to do with hundreds of artists, architects, writers and musicians in exile. Further, there are talented artists in Cuba facing financial hardships that would benefit tremendously from this unique opportunity,” said Victor Deupi, President of CINTAS.

Submissions for the Fellowship competitions are reviewed by panels of highly qualified, independent jurors from each artistic discipline. The Board of the CINTAS Foundation makes the final decision after considering the jury recommendations.  To apply, applicants should follow the procedures outlined on the CINTAS Foundation website, www.cintasfoundation.org.

The CINTAS Foundation is the benchmark for promoting Cuban visual arts, architecture and design, music composition, and creative writing. For the past 55 years, the Foundation has continually done so, in support of Cuban exile artists. “If now the CINTAS Foundation can also support talented Cuban artists whose work may otherwise not have been recognized, then we are fulfilling our founder’s mission,” said Deupi.

The CINTAS Fellowship Program is administered by the CINTAS Foundation Board and the Miami Dade College Museum of Art and Design.

The CINTAS Fellowship Program encourages creative development by awarding Fellowships in architecture and design, creative writing, music composition and visual arts. The CINTAS Foundation was established with funds from the estate of Oscar B. Cintas (1887-1957), former Cuban ambassador to the United States, a prominent industrialist and patron of the arts. In June 2011, the CINTAS Foundation entered into an extended loan to MDC’s Museum of Art and Design of the CINTAS Fellows Collection. This very special evening features the screening of ‘An American Story’, a short documentary directed by Thomas Granovsky on Speedy Graphito’s current exhibition. Speedy Graphito’s artistic universe has always been built on an honest dialogue concerning the role of the image within modern society. Since the inception of his career in the 1980’s, his work has dealt with concepts of commercialism, iconography, and pop culture. His new series of work, what he refers to as “mon histoire de l’art” (or “my art history”), confronts our consumerist society and the omnipresence of images and globalization of culture.

His work for An American Story references motifs and themes from some of the most recognizable painters in art history, from Van Gogh and Matisse, to Andy Warhol and Tom Wesselman. Juxtaposed alongside his own style, the mixture of modern and contemporary masters stands to question the role of art and its legacy through a shifted perspective.

Speedy Graphito, a student of the renowned School of Art Estienne, has since cemented his place as one of the most influential figures who emerged from the Parisian art scene in the 1980’s. His reputation has steadily grown during his 30 year career, affecting a myriad of artists by laying the foundation of his genre, urban and pop art through the lens of contemporary media culture.

The constant evolution of his work is a testament to the versatility that he brings through his medium. Speedy Graphito juggles between painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video and performance. And for the past 6 years in the United States, the artist has invigorated the cultural landscape with his tireless commitment to the visual discourse of our generation.

Celebrating the global impact of Speedy Graphito, the Museum of Le Touquet-Paris-Plage is currently holding the artist’s first museum retrospective, UN ART DE VIVRE. The exhibition employs the entirety of the museum’s Villa Way Side and takes the show back through the artist’s career, from its beginning in the 1980s (where one will find the famous poster la Rué vers l’art or the Lapinture character) to the recent works of the series “mon histoire de l’art”. The museum exhibition will be on view through May 21, 2017.

The Fascinating Art Of Cuban Artist Ulices Alfonso

Cuban artist Ulices Alfonso is a Miami-based multidisciplinary artist whose current series of work ‘Abandoned‘ represents the idea of false images of the human being. Alfonso’s work was selected to be exhibited this coming May at the Cuban Nostalgia exhibition in Miami, celebrating all things Cuban. The emerging artist is quickly making a name for himself, he is definitely an up-and-coming artist to keep your eyes on.

His work is meaningful and unique, offering a deeper understanding of life with references to disfuntional families, human fears and duplistic personalities. There is an interesting quality in his work, which implies our ability to be phony at times yet believing that we are saints when in fact we are only human and very much flawed.

Alfonso depicts his characters with circles above their heads, the use of the halo to suggest the paradox of both the light and the dark within us. “My work speaks about the false image of the human being. My characters represent a circle of strong situations; fear, double faces, the inability to speak, and to be in connection with something from the past,” said the artist. “My characters speak without words, as the colors, textures, and movements speak through them.”

Alfsonso believes we are the product of a connection to many fears, always digging to find something that is missing or forgotten in our life, something ambiguous from our past perhaps.

He is the winner of a recent art competition with Interior Ink, which specializes in custom printed interior décor for bespoke applications in the architectural, commercial, and residential design communities. Alfonso’s work will be featured in New York City through Interior Ink’s summer trade show.

A figurative painter with a philosophical and esoteric approach to art, Alfonso’s work focuses on colorful, enigmatic characters who come together as a tribe of unidealized figures defying objectification.
