Expressionist Artist MG Stout Creates Incredible Custom Pet Portraits From Your Own Photo

A dog owner herself, artist Mary Gallagher Stout understands that each animal has a unique personality, and she works to convey that through her work. Using the photo as a reference, she uses charcoal and pencil to make her initial sketches directly onto the canvas. She then mixes her own custom colors, and uses layers of glazes that help to add an expressive texture to the piece.

The final piece is vibrant and tries to capture the essence of what makes its subject unique. This is an unforgettable way to pay tribute to a current furry family member, or to commemorate a pet who now lives on in your heart.

Place an order today, see link for more! MG Stout (Mary Gallagher Stout) is a Resident Artist at Studio 18 in Pembroke Pines, located at 1101 Poinciana Drive in Pembroke Pines, Florida 33025.

The South Florida Wellness Network in collaboration with NAEMI present "Against the Current Outsider Art" Exhibition

Gloria de la Caridad, CUBA. The work of Gloria de la Caridad (Havana,1958) is closely linked to the domicile, to the materials – cardboard, magazine clippings, nail painting, textiles, homemade rubber – that she finds around her. With them she builds anthropomorphic collages on a human scale that she obsessively fills with figures. Some of them are feminine (smiling faces taken from couché paper), but there are also masks of primitive resonances, devils and an endless number of decorative motifs that she draws with meticulousness.

The South Florida Wellness Network in collaboration with National Art Exhibition of the Mentally Ill (NAEMI) invites you to the opening of their new location and the NAEMI Gallery space, located in the Wynwood Art District at 3408 NW 7th Avenue in Miami, Florida 33127. NAEMI will present the exhibition, Against the Current Outsider Art, an exploration of works created by outsider artists recovering from behavioral health issues. The Opening Reception will take place at the NAEMI Gallery on Thursday, August 8th 2024, from 6 – 8pm. The exhibition will be on view from August 8th through September 30th, 2024.

Yaniel Agrafojo Sanchez, CUBA. Yaniel Agrafojo Sánchez is a self-taught artist born on December 17, 1984 in Guanabacoa, Havana. From a young age he had an acute photographic memory, reproducing images of locomotives and trains in every detail of their parts, down to the smallest. His social behavior was limited, very introverted, and he demonstrated scant communication skills while growing up.

Featured Artists in the exhibition Against the Current Outsider Art will include:
Candice Avery USA, Issac Crespo CUBA, Lisa Chuan Lee Cheng USA, Echo USA, Ramon Losa SPAIN, Misleidys Castillo CUBA, Jorge Alberto Hernández Cadi (El Buzo) CUBA, Sebastián Ferreira PARAGUAY, Yaniel Agrafojo Sanchez CUBA, Gloria de la Caridad CUBA, and Damas USA.

Misleidys Castillo, CUBA. Misleidys was born with brain, hearing and autistic impediments. She has always lived in her own secluded world, inserted in a familiar environment.Painting with watercolors and pencils has been her great passion since early childhood. Over time, the sketching of muscular male figures with hard facial features has become central to her work. Gradually these figures she colors, cuts and pastes on the wall have acquired a large format – even bigger than the actual human size – and can be looked at as sculptures.

South Florida Wellness Network (SFWN) is a recovery focused support network run and driven by young adults, adults, and family peers. We are a community of individuals who have been strengthened by our lived experiences with behavioral, emotional, mental health, trauma and/or substance use challenges. Our shared experience unites and empowers us to help others discover their unique path to recovery.

Echo, USA. Echo McCallister’s style is innocent, childish, primitive. Although not fully aware of it, he has created figures and shapes of intense simplicity. He explores the possibilities of color to recreate fantastic landscapes inhabited by dragonflies, giant flowers, naked trees… all these works bear his unique hallmark, similar to other 20th Century artists like Joan Miró or Jasper Johns.

National Art Exhibition of the Mentally Ill (NAEMI) is a non-profit organization established in South Florida dedicated to discovering, studying, promoting, exhibiting, and preserving the art of those struggling with mental illnesses throughout the world. NAEMI has done pioneering work during the past 35 years in recognizing the artistic talent of individuals recovering from mental illnesses and providing a forum for bringing these talents to public awareness.

Jorge A. Hernandez Cadi “El Buzo”, CUBA. The practice of Jorge Alberto Hernández Cadi of scavenging in the garbage has resulted in him being popularly known as “the diver”. He utilizes recycled materials such as brass and wood boxes on whose exterior and interior sides he adds black and white photographs. To do this he trims and draws with a blue pen content of a sexual and diabolical nature.

Founded in 1988, NAEMI emerges while Juan Martin, the Executive Director, worked providing counselling to mentally disabled persons at a community mental health center in Miami. After encouraging a client to paint as a way to escape his intense suffering, Martin remembers how he liked that artwork and realized at that moment that there were probably many other talented persons in psychiatric hospitals waiting to be discovered.

Art collectors and aficionados are cordially invited to attend the Opening Reception of Against the Current Outsider Art, an exploration of works created by outsider artists recovering from behavioral health issues, taking place at the new NAEMI Gallery in Wynwood on Thursday, August 8th, 2024 from 6 – 8pm. The exhibition will be on view from August 8th through September 30th, 2024. The NAEMI Gallery is located at 3408 NW 7th Avenue in Miami, Florida 33127.

Mixed Media Artist Vito Bonanno Taps Into The Daily Emotional Social Challenges Of Living & Working With Autism

'King Kong', by internationally collected artist Vito Bonanno, from his Obsessions & Meditations series - made with aerosol, acrylic, craypas, paint marker, archival glitter on canvas, 53.5 “ x 63.5” framed. This art piece was acquired by Amazon. They made a purchase of 6 of Bonanno's original pieces for one of their corporate buildings in Seattle.

The New England-based artists’ work is image and concept driven and imbedded in his personal philosophy. Bonanno's art contains the essence of his life, feelings, thoughts and dreams, coupled around objects or topics that "get stuck in his head".

Internationally recognized artist Vito Bonanno taps into the daily emotional and social challenges of living with autism, placing his innermost feelings onto canvas. The New England-based artists’ work is image and concept driven and embedded in his personal philosophy. His art contains the essence of his life, feelings, thoughts, and dreams, coupled around objects or topics that “get stuck in his head”, including traffic lights, grids, ceiling fans, graffiti and pop culture.

Vito Bonanno has exhibited in solo exhibitions during Art Basel Week in Miami, Florida, Umbrella Arts Gallery, NYC, and Akus Gallery, at Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) in Willimantic, CT. His numerous group exhibitions include a sold-out exhibition at Metro Curates, NYC in 2014, Uarts & CT Places in Hartford, CT; New England ADA in Boston, Mass; The Outsider Art Fair in New York and Intuit Outsider Art Fair in Chicago.

In 2009, Bonanno won an Award of Excellence in a juried competition for young people with disabilities, produced by VSA Arts and sponsored by Volkswagen in 2009. He was named one of 15 emerging young artists with disabilities and was honored during the artist reception in Washington, D.C. His winning pieces, ‘Ghost Town on Davenport Avenue’ was exhibited at the S. Dillon Ripley Center of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. and then was part of a traveling exhibition that went on a two-year nationwide tour of the university and independent galleries. Additionally, a second winning piece titled ‘Southhaven People’ was on exhibit at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C. before also partaking in the nationwide traveling exhibition that ran through September 2011.

'Journal', in the corporate collection of Google, in one of their offices in Leesburg, VA.

Due to a lack of accessible art education programs for college-age adults with autism and other similar neuro-diversities, Bonanno began private art classes at Creative Arts Workspace in New Haven in 2006 and has continued his formal training via private instruction from a variety of formally trained artists.

In January 2012, Bonanno unveiled his first Solo Exhibition, Unfiltered V: Vito Bonanno Riding with the Train Girls, at Akus Gallery at Eastern CT State University which included works on paper, canvas, video pieces, a student-artist interactive mural project, and installations. Akus Gallery Director, Elizabeth Peterson stated, “The characters, objects, and ideas that inhabit Vito Bonanno’s work act and interact in striking ways. Caught within the grids and map-like structures he imagines, they are often in a struggle between multiple worlds. He has found a way to tap in the intensity of focus and insight afforded him through autism to unleash a formidable creative power and vision.”

Bonanno launched a Solo Exhibition, 'Truck’n With Vito!', at Umbrella Arts Gallery, NYC in May 2014. Bonanno and his team transformed a typical van into a popup art gallery that traveled through CT earlier in 2014. From May through July the roaming art gallery came to New York and made stops at various locations in the city, including Bushwick Open Studios, sharing Bonanno’s art and spreading the word for the need for increased accessible higher education in the arts for adults with autism.

'Vito's Mind', (2016) part of the Controversial series.

Current and ongoing, Vito continues to work with various artist facilitators in his studio in Old Saybrook, CT expanding his knowledge of materials and techniques and further developing his creative vision. His unique view of the world provides a seemingly endless well of inspiration that fills his head with images and concepts until they spill over onto the canvas bursting on the scene in vibrant colors and hard to ignore imagery that can harbor obvious, but often secret messages.

Vito was chosen to participate in the prestigious global art competition Art Olympia in Tokyo, Japan 2015. His painting 'Skatepark Krusty' from Obsessions & Meditations was a First Round Winner. Bonanno was also chosen to feature his work in Art for Autism at Pan American Art Projects Gallery in the Wynwood Arts District of Miami, Florida in July 2015. He has been featured and spotlighted on Saatchi Art homepage twice in a row since July 2015, hand-picked by Saatchi Chief Curator Rebecca Wilson. In 2015 Bonanno was one of 16 artists in the United States selected for a prestigious exhibition of previous awardees from the VSA Emerging Artists Program in the Kennedy Center’s Hall of Nations with sponsorship from Volkswagen Group of America. This exhibition was showcased as part of the celebrations for the 25th Anniversary of the ADA and 40th Anniversary of VSA, and included the work of select artists who represented the past 13 years of the VSA Emerging Young Artist Program; Curated by Stephanie Moore, ‘Daffy Goes to Waterbury with a Ninja Turtle’ and ‘SECR Toilet’ were chosen to be part of the exhibition.

‘Daffy Goes to Waterbury with a Ninja Turtle’, sold to a private collector, from Bonanno's Obsession & Meditation Series (2014) and was exhibited at Spectrum Art Fair during Art Basel Miami Beach, solo exhibition 2014. Made with aerosol, acrylic, paint pen, craypas, and archival glitter on canvas; 41.5″H x 41.5″W framed.

In 2016 and 2017 Bonanno shifted gears and began creating a prolific collection of works that propelled him into a variety of gallery shows, US exhibitions and projects including Art Expo New York; Love Art Gallery, CT; Lotta Studio in New Haven, CT; Art Access Studio in Ohio; Lesley University group exhibition in March 2016 titled '3+ Artists: Celebrating Autism', curated and organized by Elizabeth Stringer Keefe, Assistant Professor of Graduate Special Education at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Bonanno was invited to participate in a group mural project in New Haven, Connecticut at Yale University in June 2018 as part of a public art initiative. Vito is also an artist with ArtLifting since early 2018, which is a non-for-profit art organization that empowers artists living with disabilities through the celebration and sale of their artwork. ArtLifting is about creating opportunity, empowerment, and validation.

Bonanno was diagnosed with PDD/Autism just before his 4th birthday. Because he was language delayed, his parents and teachers developed strategies that tapped into his high visual acuity, utilizing storyboard styles to relay academic and social information. He was also encouraged to draw in storyboard format to express his feelings. The storyboard grid remains prominent in his work and studio preparation today and is a poignant reminder of a boy who was trapped in his own mind.

The New England-based artists work is image and concept driven and imbedded in his personal philosophy. His art contains the essence of his life, feelings, thoughts, and dreams, coupled around objects or topics that “get stuck in his head”, including traffic lights, grids, ceiling fans, graffiti and pop culture. The Beautiful Fine Art Paintings of Miami-based Portrait Artist Elena Kaplan

South Florida visual artist Elena Kaplan creates magnificent contemporary portraits, she is best known for her beautiful paintings of faces and figurative works. “I have always had a deep inner need and desire to create. I want to capture beauty, and my preferred subject is the human face. I could draw or paint a thousand faces and never get bored,” said the artist. “My medium of choice is oil paint, it’s luminous and alive, with endless possibilities, and knowing the masters have painted in oil for hundreds of years, makes it feel special, like an age-old ritual.”

Born and raised in The Netherlands, Elena started drawing as soon as she could hold a pencil and never stopped; if there was a piece of paper in front of her she couldn’t help but draw. Surrounded by world-class museums in her native country, she was fascinated by the works of the old masters, especially Rembrandt and Johannes Vermeer. Elena moved to California at the age of eighteen, and studied acting, worked as a make-up artist and in the fitness industry as a trainer and model. She has had a successful career and family life, she resides and paints full-time in Miami. We recently had the pleasure to chat with the artist to learn more about her work and current projects:

Q – What is the best part about being an artist?

A – The best part is doing what I was meant to do on a daily basis. That doesn’t mean I feel inspired every day, and sometimes the process can be downright frustrating, but it’s all worth it when it comes together and I start to feel pleased with the outcome. It’s deeply fulfilling to create something of beauty for others to enjoy. Also, I get to do all of this in the comfort of my home studio, in my own little world, and set my own hours!

‘Emerging‘, Oil on Canvas, 48 x 36 Inches

Q – Where does your inspiration come from, and how would you describe your work?

A – My inspiration comes from beauty in nature and the human form. I’ve always been obsessed with beautiful faces. I’m trying to convey something ethereal on the canvas. I think my work can be described as abstract realism. I’m not sure if that’s the correct term, but since I’m combining realism with some abstract elements, that makes sense to me.

Q – Which artist or artists (past and/or present) do you admire most and why?

A – I grew up in Holland so I have a special affinity for the masters of the Dutch Golden Age. I remember being in awe as a child seeing some of the masterpieces by the likes of Rembrandt, Vermeer, Fabritius, and others. The way they painted light and likeness, without optic aids, except maybe for a camera obscura, remains very impressive. The late 19th century painters Bouguereau and John Singer-Sargent were very skilled and their depictions of women are just exquisite. I also love the strange, surrealistic works by Dali, such a fascinating person. Chuck Close is another artist I greatly admire, for reviving realism, and for his innovative portraits. Then there are the countless contemporary realist painters, like Alyssa Monks, Casey Baugh, Davis Kassan, I could go on, there are just so many amazing artists I admire.

‘Black on Black’, Oil on Canvas, 48 x 36 Inches

Q – What is your creative process like, how do you create one of your masterpieces, do you have any fun studio stories to share?

A – I’ll be inspired by an image of a strikingly beautiful face or the female nude body and I will get an idea on how to depict it on my canvas. Sometimes I combine multiple images and of course my imagination. Often I’ll do a grisaille underpainting, then layer color glazes on top, this goes on forever because I’m never satisfied. I’ll always find something to change or correct, at some point I just have to make myself stop. I usually don’t varnish it then either, in case I will still want to change something weeks later.

Q – How can we use the arts to inspire action or positive change in the world?

A – Visual arts evoke emotions, just like music or literature does. It makes us more human, it makes us think. Art stirs something inside of us, our higher self that’s above hatred, pity and separateness. It connects people. Art does not have to be thought-provoking or inspire movements, to do this. Art can lift us up and add joy to our lives. It can bring out compassion and empathy in us, which is sorely needed in this world.

‘Girl With Bird’, Oil on Canvas, 20 x 16 Inches

This summer, as guests walk into the Bakehouse Art Complex in Miami's Wynwood Art District, they will be greeted by a newly-commissioned installation by Bakehouse artist Alain Castoriano, Tropical Storm, on view in the atrium.

Tropical Storm explores the power of natural events, particularly, their ability to transform the places through which they pass in the span of a few short moments. Through Alain's dynamic use of color and composition, he has worked to expand the visual vocabulary of his practice beyond the limits of a canvas, creating a conversation between different surfaces and the larger space.

When asked about the making of Tropical Storm, Alain commented, "When I was asked to exhibit some of my works in the atrium of Bakehouse, I immediately considered the very beautiful overhead light of this space. I realized that, given its size, I wanted to occupy the space in a dynamic way, rather than simply hanging a few paintings on the wall."

Escape the summer heat! Come by to see Alain's installation and visit the Bakehouse artists in their studios, Bakehouse Art Complex is located at 561 NW 32nd Street in Miami, Florida 33127.
