The Magnificent Sculptures Of Ágnes Nagy Combine Reality, Imagination, Nature & Mysticism

Hungarian Sculptor Ágnes Nagy has been developing her career as a sculptor since childhood. Her large statues of animals embody specific spiritual, ideological and moral meaning. At a very young age Ágnes Nagy attended the Medgyessy Ferenc sculpting workshop led by the sculptor Gábor Szabó in Pestújhely, one of the northern suburbs of Budapest. And later graduated from the Secondary School of Fine and Applied Arts of Budapest, known as “Kisképző” in 1994. Her large statues of animals in glazed fireclay, brass, bronze, and steel mixed media embody specific spiritual, ideological and moral meaning.

“The framework of my life is made through my sculpting, and it is able to hold me on the ground as much as it is able to take me away from reality both in years with difficulties and trials and the happy and successful periods of time,” said Nagy of her work. As far as her subject matter is concerned, “I didn’t choose animals, they were the ones who found me and refuse to let me go for now,” explained the artist.

Ágnes Nagy’s work was recently exhibited at Art Palm Beach from January 31 – February 03, 2020 with Erdész Gallery & Design. “The expressiveness of Nagy’s artistic credo is embodied in bronze, glazed fireclay, stainless steel, and realistic animal portrayals. Every sculpture by Ágnes can be given a specific spiritual, ideological and moral meaning—that may be reformulated by the viewer in several ways,” said Adam Erdesz of Erdész Gallery.

“Art is a way of life in which the artist’s professional and personal life are not separated. It’s not a consciously made choice, so every artist takes the responsibility to do what they love most and are the best at, and through it all they can produce something for people to enjoy. Anyone who has ever visited an exhibition or has artwork in their home will know the power of art. It can impress people, fill them up with positive vibes, can contribute to the growth of their personality and sense of style, and their becoming something more.

By creating art, I can connect to people on an entirely different level, I can reach emotional strings vibrating deep inside, which is only possible through art.” This internationally collected sculptor plans to hold more exhibitions in the United States, "visual arts are about designing objects and figurative and non-figurative shapes, and I am fundamentally interested in creating artworks that can be displayed in indoor spaces, a piece of art that people can live with. This is a tiny market in Hungary, collectors and artists know each other by name. The segment of the customers who purchase contemporary sculptures is even smaller. It is necessary to extend this market to international customers.”

New month. New look. New tools. Same Superfine!

Change is good.

For four years, Superfine! blazed a trail of accessibility and transparency in the art market, converting countless art lovers into collectors, and sparking change in each Superfine! city and how its denizens view and interact with contemporary art.
With Superfine's new look, they're not shifting identities but evolving. Their core mission remains the same: to build an art fair that represents the pinnacle of accessible contemporary art, breaks down barriers by challenging stuffy art world norms, and creates a more friendly, inclusive space to discover, collect, and sell art. In that process they've pioneered strategies that level the playing field and set a new standard for curation within the segment of the art market with the most movement in sales. Their goal is to advance buyer trust, widening the market by redefining exactly who a collector really is.

Superfine! has shifted to a visual language that reflects how serious and dedicated they are to these goals. Along with a new look, here are just a few of the ways they're innovating towards a strong, sustainable new art market.
Better financing options.
More than 50% of their artists and galleries at Superfine! LA offered collectors the ability to pay via Art Money (an interest-free credit system). It's also important for them to stay on the cutting edge of how their direct clients - artists and galleries - can leverage new methods to thrive. Cash flow concerns can keep emerging galleries and artists from taking valuable opportunities, and Superfine! has introduced financing tools for them as well:
Square Installments
Galleries and artists in 22 states can apply for credit via Square Installments to pay for their booth(s) in as many as 12 monthly payments.
TransferWise
Using this service pioneered by Skype's first employee, Superfine's global exhibitors can lock in interest rates instead of being subject to the whims of banks.
Transparent Up-Front Discounts
You help Superfine's cash flow, they help yours. Pay up front and receive a 5% net discount. Two fairs? 10% Three? 15%. Ask for more details.
Challenge yourself.
Superfine! has always emphasized a strong curatorial approach, and 2019 brings with it an even greater focus on accessible art interventions that tap into the zeitgeist while giving voice to a diverse body of artists from across the globe.

Each fair will host at least three curatorial projects and installations, with an emphasis on LGBTQ+ artists and themes, along with artists from diverse walks of life channeling their experiences into tangible, exciting, immersive environments.
Where will they go next?
It's no secret that Superfine! landed in L.A. last month, and they'll be back again next year. In 2020, the fair will also expand to two more west coast cities as well as strengthening their east coast strongholds in New York and Washington DC with fairs that grow both in size and in focus, along with an amplified year-round Collectors' Society program in all cities.

Fabien Castanier Gallery in Los Angeles Sept 16th Opening Reception of "Mark Making" Group Exhibition

Mark Making
with Aaron De La Cruz, Alex Kizu (aka Defer), & Mark Dean Veca
September 16 - October 14, 2017

Opening Reception with the Artists
SATURDAY, SEPT 16th @ 6-9PM

Fabien Castanier Gallery is excited to announce their next exhibition in Los Angeles, Mark Making, featuring work from Aaron De La Cruz, Alex Kizu (aka Defer), and Mark Dean Veca. Each of these artists present work that is built on a foundation of mark-making. Recalling a variety of styles, including abstraction, design, and graffiti, the artists are most familiar with creating large scale installations, pieces that envelope the viewer in realms of meticulously detailed linework and hypnotizing compositions. The exhibition will include paintings, sculpture and installation.

Aaron De La Cruz | "Untitled" (detail) stucco on wooden panel, 1 of 4 panels, 60 x 48 in. (152x122cm)
TOP: Alex Kizu (Defer) | "Natural Habitat" (detail) acrylic on canvas, 73.25 x 49.5 in. framed (186x126cm)

Aaron De La Cruz presents paintings and sculpture that incorporate patterns and motifs that at their core are very simple, but when gathered together create complex, labyrinthine compositions. His pieces, with bold lines and distinctive use of color, straddle the line between painting and design. He reduces his expression into its most minimal form, keeping in mind the surface that he paints on as his patterns seem to flow over and within the walls and canvas. The artist's marks are more often than not unplanned and instinctual, work that he hopes the viewer will infuse with their own narrative. By combining a minimalist aesthetic and often purposefully minimal materials, he seeks to create affecting work with maximum impact.

Alex Kizu's work stems from his culture and connection to graffiti and the urban landscape, representing a profound artistic language which distorts the lines between street art and fine art. Kizu, aka Defer, was one of the pioneer members of the first generation of Los Angeles graffiti writers, and he has distilled the hand-style developed since his youth into abstract pieces that incorporate not only typographic motifs but cultural motifs, and complex patterning. Kizu's paintings are highly detailed examinations of line and color, frenetic structures that flow organically with multi-layered abstractions that create a borderless visual depth and complexity.

Mark Dean Veca's newest work evolved out of the textures and patterns found in his more representational compositions. By distilling the line-work aesthetic he has used in part, Veca's paintings and installation are an examination of the patterns and details which have grown organically from his oeuvre. The visual motif in these "Dither" paintings are improvisational – spontaneous and abstracted tessellations that exist un-tethered to any particular orientation. By observing his paintings and stepping into his installation, the viewer is engulfed within an optical meditation. While purely abstract, his forms express a refined organic geometry and a sense of depth and illusion contained within a balanced yet tumultuous array.

#SAVEARTSPACE: Los Angeles "We Only Have One Place To Live" Open Call For Los Angeles Area Artists

#SAVEARTSPACE: Los Angeles
We Only Have One Place To Live
Open Call For Art!

#SAVEARTSPACE brings public art to Los Angeles, showcasing local artists on advertising spaces throughout the area beginning January 16, 2017. The exhibition is entitled, "We Only Have One Place To Live."  The artists are responding to the most important global concern, which affects all of us—the current and changing state of our natural environment. Recently, scientists and researchers identified that we are now living in the first epoch in Earth's history where our environment is being actively changed by human activity across our planet. "We Only Have One Place to Live" aims will explore the tension, between human society and the environment; between static and change. The exhibition is asking local artists to voice their passionate concerns about how their changing environment is affecting our globalized society, not just through environmental phenomena—such as prolonged droughts, wildfires, rising sea-levels, air quality, water conservation and more—but also the philosophical and existential questions that arise when we are both the problem, and the potential solution, to the crises our world faces.

We invite artists of all ages & talents in the Los Angeles area to submit! Artists are invited to apply between September 14th and November 23rd, 2016. There is a $10 fee per image to participate, each donation is a tax deduction and goes to producing public art. Only digital format entries will be eligible, each artist is encouraged to submit up to three images. Submissions will be accepted at saveartspace.org/losangeles.

A qualified panel of Curators will consider each submission's pertinence to the theme of the exhibition, the context of the images and association to the public space. Curators include Justin Aversano and Travis Rix, whom together have curated the previous four public art exhibitions by #SAVEARTSPACE.

All submissions will be featured on #SAVEARTSPACE social media pages with the permission of the artist. The complete list of rules for submissions can be found atsaveartspace.org/submit.

#SAVEARTSPACE has previous held four Public Art Exhibitions in New York City and one in Miami, Fl. If you live in the Los Angeles, California area, please consider submitting your art to our Public Art Exhibition!

Curators
Justin Aversano received his BFA in Photography at School of Visual Arts in New York. He is also owner and operator of professional photography lab Brooklyn Lightroom, based in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Justin is an active artist and curator, working within the greater Bushwick and Brooklyn art scene. He has organized and curated a number of shows along with The Living Gallery, and when not creating, Justin can be found skateboarding around, taking his dog Tia (short for Tortilla) for walks, and socializing with friends.

Travis Rix received his BFA in Photography at School of Visual Arts in New York, and was featured in the 2014 Mentors Show at the SVA Gallery. When not out on the streets looking for new locations for art installations, or helping within the community, you can find Travis socializing in the park, painting, or spending time with friends and family.

Also, a special guest curator to be announced at a later date.
#SAVEARTSPACE is dedicated to producing public art exhibitions. We work with contributors to provide local artists visual platforms in the public space. By creating an urban gallery experience, we aim to affect and inspire a new generation of artists.

Jeff Widener's 'Tiananmen Square, June 4th, 1989' photograph marks the 27th anniversary of the June 4th massacre

Jeff Widener - Tiananmen Square, June 4th, 1989

THE PICTURE | THE STORY

Today, marks the 27th anniversary of the June 4th massacre, as Chinese Troops killed unarmed civilians trying to block the military's advance towards Tiananmen Square. American photojournalist Jeff Widener made his way into Beijing, and documented the civil unrest that was occurring in the city. He has a unique story that describes how he made this iconic photograph, nominated finalist for the 1990 Pulitzer Prize, which has come to represent the single individual alone, standing up against the power and force of a determined military action.

In his own words, Jeff Widener describes the story behind his photograph, made on this fateful day in Tiananmen Square:

"My picture of a lone man stopping a column of tanks is a classic example of being in the right place at the right time. In fact, the photo almost didn't happen. I had a bad case of the flu and on June 4th, 1989 I suffered a serious concussion from a rock that was thrown by a protester. To top it all off, I almost blew the shot due to the shutter speed of the camera being too slow. The Chinese did not want me to enter the country as a journalist, so I entered the country through Hong Kong as a tourist. The picture was made possible with the help of an American student named Kurt, who allowed me access to his hotel room. He then smuggled the film back to the AP Beijing office in his underwear. The next day, I received telegrams from all over the world that my picture was fronting newspapers [on the cover of newspapers] in every country. To this day, the fate of that lone man is unknown." -- Jeff Widener, February 26th, 2006.
