Discover the Bold Visions & Vivid Color of Digital Artist Martin Fine’s Extraordinary Work

Contemporary digital artist Martin Fine in his art studio

South Florida contemporary artist Martin Fine is a self-taught digital artist whose journey from commercial photography to abstract expressionism reflects a lifelong passion for visual storytelling. With a successful art career that began behind the lens — capturing architecture, interiors, and design — Martin developed a sharp eye for form, light, and composition. Today, his vibrant digital paintings are infused with the spirit of Impressionism and Expressionism, yet fully grounded in modern technique.

Inspired by masters like Van Gogh, Renoir, Kandinsky, and Chuck Close, Martin creates bold, color-rich works that bridge traditional beauty and contemporary flair. Now working full-time as an artist, his pieces are known for their dynamic energy, painterly textures, and emotional resonance — each one a celebration of color, vision, transformation, and the power of reinvention.

Martin Fine is a prolific and versatile artist with an extensive inventory of work spanning a wide range of styles and series. From bold modern abstracts and Bauhaus-inspired compositions to striking depictions of Art Deco architecture and the iconic Miami Beach skyline — as well as breathtaking prints of New York City’s historic buildings and signature yellow taxi cabs — Martin Fine’s portfolio reflects both artistic depth and technical range.

The eye of the photographer is, naturally, paramount to  the art of photography. The artist strives to capture what is unique, but also familiar often  reporting back to the viewer where we are in the present.

“We are all on this planet to create and we each have our own self-expression of who we are. It’s the job of the artist to bring out what is inside, what they are feeling, what they are conceptualizing, and bring it out in their work and I do that in my fine art photographs and video installation art. My work keeps moving and growing and it keeps changing but there are some things which are constant about it. My work is about connection. Connection to the self, each other, to all lifeforms on this planet and also a connection to the entire universe,” explains Maeder.

Dancing Tree: a short film by photographer and video/sound installation artist Cheryl Maeder

Experience a short film 'Dancing Tree' by Cheryl Maeder

"There are times I find myself living in a black and white world. When I am in this state, I separate from Nature; and therefore, I separate from my very core of being. Living in this black and white world of judgements, I cannot see the true colors of Nature, and hear the masterpiece that is Nature’s Symphony. When I am truly living in the present, I am living in harmony with Nature. I experience her dazzling display of colors, and the ballet of her movements, of which I am an integral part of." Cheryl Maeder, Photographer and Video/Sound Installation Artist.

The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University seeks entries for the Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize

Before WWII, every Ryukyu family home held an ancestral altar called a Butsudan. The Butsudan is the satellite and transmitter for prayers to the ancestors. Gelatin silver print by Chinen Aimi, winner of the 2019 Lange-Taylor Prize.

Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize

The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University seeks entries for the Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize. The winner receives $10,000, features in Center for Documentary Studies' digital publications, and inclusion in the Archive of Documentary Arts at Rubenstein Library, Duke University, in Durham, NC. Open to documentary artists of any age and nationality. The Lange-Taylor Prize is intended to support artists, working alone or in teams, who are engaged in extended, ongoing fieldwork projects that fully exploit the relationship of words and images in the powerful, persuasive representation of a subject. The prize is not awarded for completed projects or to support the production of a book, exhibit, website, or other outcomes. $60 entry fee. Deadline: May 15, 2020.
SUBMISSIONS FOR THE 2020 LANGE-TAYLOR PRIZE will be accepted through May 15, 2020. See How to Enter and FAQs.
First announced in 1990, the Dorothea Lange–Paul Taylor Prize was created by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University to encourage collaboration between documentary writers and photographers in the tradition of the acclaimed photographer Dorothea Lange and writer and social scientist Paul Taylor. In 1941 Lange and Taylor published An American Exodus, a book that renders human experience eloquently in text and images and remains a seminal work in documentary studies.
Like Lange and Taylor, and all serious documentarians, the competitive applicants to this prize have a point of view derived from an in-depth understanding of place, history, and the current situation, in concert with a personal relationship to the proposed work. Ultimately, their commitment is to use documentary expression to motivate the thinking and reflection of others.
In 2011, in recognition of the changing environment in which documentary artists conduct their work, the prize guidelines were reframed to allow single artists to apply. In part, this new approach to the prize was inspired by the Center for Documentary Studies’ commitment to the Master of Fine Arts in Experimental and Documentary Arts at Duke University, which brings together two forms of artistic activity—the documentary approach and experimental production in analog, digital, and computational media.
The winner receives $10,000, features in Center for Documentary Studies’ digital publications, and inclusion in the Archive of Documentary Arts at Rubenstein Library, Duke University.
Chinen Aimi is the 2019 winner of the Dorothea Lange–Paul Taylor Prize.
Honorable Mentions Awarded to Christopher Kojzar and Lucas Olivet and Lauren Haddad-Olivet

Internationally Collected Visual Artist & Filmmaker Cheryl Maeder's New Video Installation 'Simulacra'

Internationally collected visual artist and filmmaker Cheryl Maeder's new video installation 'Simulacra', is a reflection, an imitation, of who we have become in this social media age. "As observer & narrator of the film, I become another one of the subjects in this social commentary on our filtered reality. Special thanks to Artist Mary Tidy-Coyle for our wonderful collaboration & editing, and Brandon Martinez, Datzi Media, who will be creating an Interactive 3D APP for this installation." -Cheryl Maeder.

Vimeo: 'Simulcra'

"Since 2008, I have been exhibiting as an artist during Art Basel Week at art fairs such as Art Miami.  I have noticed that social media has transformed our daily lives. In the first years of exhibiting, when viewers would come to the exhibit, they would ask to take photos with their phones. As the years progressed, fewer people would engage directly with the art. They instead use their phones as their lens to the world. Having observed this evolution, I thought it would be interesting to use my own iphone to film the viewers, so that I become an active participant, and we all become the 'Art'."

'PLAY', a short film by internationally collected visual artist & filmmaker Cheryl Maeder.

PLAY, a short film by internationally collected visual artist & filmmaker Cheryl Maeder. From a higher vantage point, ordinary becomes extraordinary.

PLAY VIDEO INSTALLATION

PLAY Video Installation televised nationally on PBS, Project Filmmaker funded by National Endowment for the Arts. "I was walking through a shopping mall on the top floor and happened to look down at children wildly jumping and playing in this wonderland below. From the vantage point up high, the children looked like tiny elves and fairies jumping, laughing and happily playing in a breakfast-themed playground. I hurriedly went home, grabbed my camera and for several weeks returned to document the children playing. The short film, PLAY, is about the Magic. I am honored that two of the photographs from this series are featured in a prestigious, Curated Photography Collection by Hamburg Kennedy for Foster Care along with Diane Arbus, Sally Mann, Elliott Erwitt and Martin Parr."

Internationally Collected Visual Artist and Filmmaker Cheryl Maeder is a Pioneer of Art, Film and Technology

Cheryl Maeder was born and raised in Elmwood Park, New Jersey on June 18, 1949. In her early 20's she moved to Zurich, Switzerland, where she studied photography at Zurich University of the Arts. After 8 years in Switzerland, she returned to the United States and opened her studio in San Francisco where she photographed international advertising & fashion campaigns for clients such as Sony, AT&T, Visa, Calvin Klein, Marriott Hotels among others. She transitioned from photographing fashion models to photographing real women. She wanted to celebrate the beauty of women in all shapes and sizes. Her photography work became the inspiration for the global Dove Campaign on 'Real Women, Real Beauty', which was shown in the United States and throughout the world, transforming the way women are perceived in the media. That campaign was a real defining moment and ended up as not only advertisements, but also video, workshops, sleepover events and the publication of a book and a play. Oprah featured it on her TV Show.

Cheryl Maeder's 'Meditation', Les Copines Series.

“The artist has made a career out of creating work that is the opposite of what others are doing – shooting out of focus and fuzzy when the trend is hyper definition, aiming her lens at plus size women when the trend is super skinny; and projecting video when the theme is murals. But she makes it all work and makes her work stand out by doing so,” said arts writer Sandra Schulman about Cheryl Maeder and her work.

Cheryl Maeder, 'Submerge I'.

In 2005, she relocated her studio to the Miami area and deeply immersed herself into filmmaking and fine art. Her investigations into video and installations expanded her world. Through the exploration of new technologies, opportunities for creative collaborations have occurred for large-scale installations, as well as local, national and international exhibitions.

One of Cheryl's most iconic fine art photography series is Submerge, a famous collection of works that were selected for a Public Art Video Installation by the City of West Palm Beach for
Canvas Outdoor Museum Exhibition. The Submerge Series explores the relationship human beings have with the environment. The human body contains 70% of water fluids and the oceans waters cover more than 70% of the Earth itself. Water represents our connectedness to the Earth and to each other. Submerge is the courage and willingness to take the leap into the depths of the Waters of the Soul.

Enchanted multi-media art installation at Cornell Art Museum in Delray Beach, Florida

Enchanted
is a Conceptual Interactive Forest Installation by Cheryl Maeder and Diane Arrieta, who combine their works to present a modern fairy tale experience that collides with the realities of our modern world [e.g. extinction and rising waters]. Focusing on the beauty and lessons we as humans can learn from our natural landscapes and inhabitants. By constructing a faux natural environment, based on land and sea, the artists are conveying the need to “slow down and smell the flowers” before it [nature] disappears.
