City of Miami Beach Dedicates Mural for Marjory Stoneman Douglas Park

City of Miami Beach Dedicates Mural for Marjory Stoneman Douglas Park

Artist Christina Pettersson to create public artwork honoring
Douglas' environmental activism
Proposed artwork for Marjory Stoneman Douglas Park. Artist rendering, not actual image.

The City of Miami Beach is pleased to announce that Christina Pettersson has been selected by the Art in Public Places Committee (AIPP) to create a commemorative artwork for Marjory Stoneman Douglas Park. Pettersson will design and install a mural honoring the activist Marjory Stoneman Douglas, in recognition of her contributions to South Florida.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas was a poet, journalist, women's rights advocate and passionate environmentalist who lived in Miami for most of her life. Her relentless advocacy for the natural preservation and restoration of South Florida, including her influential book The Everglades: River of Grass, led to Everglades restoration efforts and inspired movements to protect the area's wildlife.

Dr. Lynette Long, Chair of the Miami Beach Commission for Women, proposed to the city's Art in Public Places Committee that Douglas be honored with a mural at her namesake park in South Beach. The committee accepted artist Christina Pettersson's proposal to create a concrete vinyl mural honoring Douglas, installed on the exterior wall of one of the park's facilities.

Artist Christina Pettersson was raised in Miami and has spent a lifetime exploring the Everglades. Her work — which spans large-scale drawings, videos, installations and collaborative performances — delves into Florida's hidden histories and endangered ecosystems, reflecting a reverence for the natural world and wild beauty. Rooted in public engagement and cross-disciplinary collaboration, her practice invites audiences to connect more deeply with the landscapes and stories in their own backyards. Her proposed mural depicts Marjory Stoneman Douglas relaxing in the habitat she spent her life protecting.

"A voracious reader of local history, as well as an avid naturalist, birder, explorer, my art evolves from the Everglades landscape I've explored since childhood," says Pettersson. "I am thrilled to honor Marjorie Stoneman Douglas, who was such a passionate conservationist and whose life's work enabled me to explore that landscape. Much like Douglas herself, I aim to reconnect audiences with our wild places and wild selves. We love what we find beautiful, and we protect what we love."

"Marjory Stoneman Douglas was a pioneer for South Florida's natural environment, and it's only fitting that her namesake park reflects her legacy," said Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner. "The planned mural will be a meaningful addition that connects our community to its history while enhancing one of our city's beloved parks."

Call for Artists: SaveArtSpace Announces New Open Call

SaveArtSpace, collaborating with Art At A Time Like This, is looking for artists of all kinds to submit work to an open call for the public art project, Ministry of Truth: 1984-2020, presenting artworks on billboards around NYC. "To be launched in October 2020, just in time for the election, we are looking for artworks that comment on the current state of U.S. politics and will stimulate dialogue about the increasing polarization of our society.
Ministry of Truth: 1984/2020 is a reference to George Orwell's dystopian novel as artists feel compelled to address the lies, fake news, trolling and propaganda in today's political rhetoric. 50 years ago, Orwell predicted a Ministry of Truth announcing WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH, horrifyingly relevant in 2020. It is up to artists with their creative imagination to envision a different future for our country."
Dread ScottDeb KassMarilyn Minter, and Shirin Neshat and other internationally renowned artists will be designing new work to present specifically for this project. The other 50% of artists will be chosen by an open call available to all—students, artists, activists, and concerned citizens. In addition to the public art project, Ministry of Truth will be featured on artatatimelikethis.com, accessible to over 120,000 viewers around the globe.

Call for Artists: SaveArtSpace presents a Public Art Series + Exhibition, “Art4Equality x Life, Liberty & The Pursuit of Happiness”

SaveArtSpace is pleased to announce a partnership with Art4Equality and The Untitled Space for an empowering public art series of billboards in New York City launching this September 2020, along with an exhibition of the artwork created for the series to be presented at The Untitled Space gallery this fall.
Open Call Ends: 11:59pm / August 10, 2020

“What do these words mean to you: “Equality,” “Life,” “Liberty,” “The Pursuit of Happiness”? We live in an unprecedented time, our liberties robbed by a global pandemic, which laid painfully bare the inequities that have plagued the most vulnerable in our society for far too long. Political polarization in the United States is reaching critical mass with a divisive political system at war. Realities of social inequality and racial injustice are challenging our ability to have confidence in a promising future. With the 2020 elections approaching, we feel it is a crucial time to create an opportunity for artists to respond to our current situation, with the artwork presented in a public platform, where it can reach an audience of millions of people every day and promote an inclusive dialogue. The public art series “Art4Equality x Life, Liberty, & The Pursuit of Happiness” seeks to empower, enlighten, and shed a ray of hope on a city that has been under a dark cloud, in a country that is in tatters not only by an invisible virus, but also by political and civil unrest. The billboard transformed into an art display is an innovative, and ultimately accessible way to present contemporary art, transforming spaces normally dedicated to advertising into public art that has power and impact.”
Curator: Indira Cesarine, founder of The Untitled Space and Art4Equality.
Artists are asked to be creative, with artwork inspired by 1 or more of the words or phrases of the theme. Each billboard will feature your artwork along with your name and the title of the artwork. This open call is open to all artists, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, or practice. All mediums are welcome.
Please submit artwork between June 10 and August 10, 2020. This is your opportunity to have your art on ad space in NYC!
There is a $10 donation per image submission to participate, each donation is a tax deduction and goes to producing the public art. Each artist is encouraged to submit up to 10 images. The selected artists will be announced after August 24, and will be exhibited on ad space in NYC starting September 21 for at least one month, with an Artist Reception on September 24th presented by The Untitled Space.

Submit your art work!

Public Art Call: Suspended Sculptural Artwork WCH Critical Care Tower/BMCJ Entry Building

841 Prudential Drive Suite 1800
Jacksonville, FL 32207

APPLY NOW

Contact Email: melanie.husk@bmcjax.com
Call Type: Proposals
Eligibility: National
State: Florida
Entry Deadline: 8/1/20

Introduction:
Baptist Health in Northeast Florida is building a new main entrance for its multi-facility, flagship campus, which serves as the centerpiece of the five-hospital health system. The seven-story building will serve as the new front door to Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville (477-bed adult hospital, largest in the health system) and Wolfson Children’s Hospital (216-bed children’s hospital, only freestanding children’s hospital between Atlanta and Orlando) as well as the adjacent Pavilion Building, which houses physician offices and other services.
Floors one and two of the new building will serve as the arrival “concourse” for various destinations within the medical campus as noted above, and the second floor is connected via skybridge to the main patient and visitor parking structure across Palm Avenue. Floors three through seven of the new building will be dedicated to a 75-bed neonatal intensive care center and a 26-bed pediatric intensive care center serving the critical care needs of the region’s infants and children. Thus, this building serves both adults and children and is designed to respond to the needs of both worlds.
The majority of the patients and their families will enter the new building at the second floor at the east end of the lobby via a skybridge from the parking. Exterior drop-off also will be provided at the ground level building entrance.
Whether patients and visitors enter the new building from the second floor skybridge or the ground floor entrance, the visual centerpiece of the two-story lobby they enter will be a sculpture suspended below the lobby ceiling. The selected work also will be visible from the primary public drive, Palm Avenue. It is the intention of Baptist Health to commission an original sculptural artwork to help in creating a healing environment for all who enter the building -- patients, families, visitors and staff.
Eligibility:
This opportunity is open to participation by individuals 18 years of age and older residing in the United States, and who have completed sculptures of similar scope. Artist teams are acceptable.
Architects’ Vision:
The new Wolfson Children’s Critical Care Tower/Baptist Jacksonville Entry Building is not only the realization of Baptist Health’s vision, but also a commitment to the City of Jacksonville and the surrounding region. The built solution will act as both a celebrated point of arrival and a haven for neonatal and pediatric intensive care patients and their families. Reflecting the dual nature of the building program, the architecture of the building will be a timeless yet playful solution while representing a progressive and modern healthcare environment at the heart of Jacksonville, FL. The material palette reflects both the quality of care delivered within the institution as well as the established building vocabulary of the campus. Exterior materials include metal panel, natural stone, large format cast concrete panels and glazing. These materials are accented with dynamic exterior and interior lighting features. Furthering Baptist’s belief in providing an all-inclusive healing environment the installation of art is to become an integral part of the building and will respond to the function and design of the building as well as mirror the spirit of their respective creators
General Sculpture Parameters:
·      Shall convey a positive, uplifting, calming and healing environment for children and adults.
·      Appropriate to its specific location and the architects’ vision.
·      Designed with consideration of patient and public safety.
·      Constructed of permanent, long-lasting materials that are virtually maintenance free.
Interior Lobby Suspended Sculpture:
The lobby sculpture will be suspended below the 24’ high two-story lobby ceiling. The majority of patients will enter this elongated lobby space at the second level from the east via a bridge from a multi-level parking structure. The sculpture will be at or just below eye height at this point. From this entry, patients travel along the lobby space and disperse to their destinations. The suspended sculpture may be concentrated at the east end, with good visibility from the street, or may traverse the full length of the lobby space to provide a visual orientation from any point in the lobby. Movement in the design of this sculpture is desired, either actual or implied, using proven low-maintenance technology.
Budget:
Delivered purchase price of completed sculpture for this location is up to $250,000The purchase prices listed must cover all associated costs of the project, including but not limited to, design, fabrication, materials, labor, transportation, insurance and an advisory role in the installation of the sculpture. In Loving Memory: A Tribute to Christo, Known for his Massive Public Arts Projects

Christo, the conceptual artist known for his massive and enduring public art installations around the world, died Sunday of natural causes in New York City. He was 84.

Christo and his wife and artistic partner, Jeanne-Claude, used both natural and manmade monuments as their canvas, wrapping existing structures in fabric to give them new life on a massive scale. Christo and Jeanne-Claude wrapped up famous monuments such as Paris’s Pont Neuf in 1985, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago in 1988, and Berlin’s Reichstag building in 1995. In South Florida, we especially remember Christo and Jeanne-Claude's 'Surrounded Islands' in 1983.

A Documentary Exhibition
October 4, 2018—February 17, 2019

On May 7, 1983, the installation of Surrounded Islands was completed in Biscayne Bay, between the city of Miami, North Miami, the Village of Miami Shores and Miami Beach by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Eleven of the islands situated in the area of Bakers Haulover Cut, Broad Causeway, 79th Street Causeway, Julia Tuttle Causeway, and Venetian Causeway were surrounded with 6.5 million square feet (603,870 square meters) of floating pink woven polypropylene fabric covering the surface of the water and extending out 200 feet (61 meters) from each island into the bay. The fabric was sewn into 79 patterns to follow the contours of the 11 islands.

For two weeks, Surrounded Islands, spreading over 7 miles (11.3 kilometers), was seen, approached and enjoyed by the public, from the causeways, the land, the water and the air. The luminous pink color of the shiny fabric was in harmony with the tropical vegetation of the uninhabited verdant islands, the light of the Miami sky and the colors of the shallow waters of Biscayne Bay.

Since April 1981, attorneys Joseph Z. Fleming, Joseph W. Landers, marine biologist Anitra Thorhaug, ornithologists Oscar Owre and Meri Cummings, mammal expert Daniel Odell, marine engineer John Michel, four consulting engineers, and builder-contractor, Ted Dougherty of A and H Builders, Inc. had been working on the preparation of the Surrounded Islands. The marine and land crews picked up debris from the eleven islands, putting refuse in bags and carting it away after they had removed some forty tons of varied garbage that included refrigerator doors, tires, kitchen sinks, mattresses and an abandoned boat.

Permits were obtained from the following governmental agencies: The Governor of Florida and the Cabinet; the Dade County Commission; the Department of Environmental Regulation; the City of Miami Commission; the City of North Miami; the Village of Miami Shores; the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; the Dade County Department of Environmental Resources Management.

The outer edge of the floating fabric was attached to a 12 inch (30.5 centimeter) diameter octagonal boom, in sections, of the same color as the fabric. The boom was connected to the radial anchor lines which extended from the anchors at the island to the 610 specially made anchors, spaced at 50 foot (15.2 meter) intervals, 250 feet (76.2 meters) beyond the perimeter of each island, driven into the limestone at the bottom of the bay. Earth anchors were driven into the land, near the foot of the trees, to secure the inland edge of the fabric, covering the surface of the beach and disappearing under the vegetation. The floating rafts of fabric and booms, varying from 12 to 22 feet (3.7 to 6.7 meters) in width and from 400 to 600 feet (122 to 183 meters) in length were towed through the bay to each island. There were eleven islands, but on two occasions, two islands were surrounded together as one configuration.

It also hosts sub-varsity football games for the Brookings School District. The facility Owner is the City of Brookings.
Bob Shelden Field was dedicated in October 1968, at which time it was named to honor the memory of the late Robert (Bob) Shelden, outstanding Brookings High School and South Dakota State College athlete. Bob Shelden passed away at the age of 21 on April 23, 1962, after a five month illness with Hodgkin’s disease.
Playing basketball, football, and baseball as well as participating in track, Bob Shelden gained All-State honors in both football and basketball on the Brookings Bobcat team of coach Nig Johnson, and graduated ninth in his class of 117 in 1959, serving as president of the BHS National Honor Society. Prior to his enrollment at SDSC, Bob was recruited by major NCAA powers Minnesota, Colorado, Arizona, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. In his sophomore year at SDSC, majoring in Professional Chemistry, Bob was a starting guard for the Jackrabbit basketball team and was considered “a top prospect to be an all-time Jackrabbit great” according to coach Jim Iverson. That Jackrabbit team won the NCC, Regionals, and finished third in the National Tournament as Bob set a SDSC field goal shooting record that stood for many years. Attesting to his quiet dignity and sincere humility, he was voted “most inspirational” cager by his fellow basketball players in the spring of 1962, even though he had missed the season because of his illness.
Bob Shelden’s tie with Brookings baseball is further strengthened by his pitching for the Brookings Cub amateur team and during the summer of 1961, he was employed by the City’s Park Department maintaining the baseball field.
