City of Miami Beach Dedicates Mural for Marjory Stoneman Douglas Park

City of Miami Beach Dedicates Mural for Marjory Stoneman Douglas Park

Artist Christina Pettersson to create public artwork honoring
Douglas' environmental activism
Proposed artwork for Marjory Stoneman Douglas Park. Artist rendering, not actual image.

The City of Miami Beach is pleased to announce that Christina Pettersson has been selected by the Art in Public Places Committee (AIPP) to create a commemorative artwork for Marjory Stoneman Douglas Park. Pettersson will design and install a mural honoring the activist Marjory Stoneman Douglas, in recognition of her contributions to South Florida.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas was a poet, journalist, women's rights advocate and passionate environmentalist who lived in Miami for most of her life. Her relentless advocacy for the natural preservation and restoration of South Florida, including her influential book The Everglades: River of Grass, led to Everglades restoration efforts and inspired movements to protect the area's wildlife.

Dr. Lynette Long, Chair of the Miami Beach Commission for Women, proposed to the city's Art in Public Places Committee that Douglas be honored with a mural at her namesake park in South Beach. The committee accepted artist Christina Pettersson's proposal to create a concrete vinyl mural honoring Douglas, installed on the exterior wall of one of the park's facilities.

Artist Christina Pettersson was raised in Miami and has spent a lifetime exploring the Everglades. Her work — which spans large-scale drawings, videos, installations and collaborative performances — delves into Florida's hidden histories and endangered ecosystems, reflecting a reverence for the natural world and wild beauty. Rooted in public engagement and cross-disciplinary collaboration, her practice invites audiences to connect more deeply with the landscapes and stories in their own backyards. Her proposed mural depicts Marjory Stoneman Douglas relaxing in the habitat she spent her life protecting.

"A voracious reader of local history, as well as an avid naturalist, birder, explorer, my art evolves from the Everglades landscape I've explored since childhood," says Pettersson. "I am thrilled to honor Marjorie Stoneman Douglas, who was such a passionate conservationist and whose life's work enabled me to explore that landscape. Much like Douglas herself, I aim to reconnect audiences with our wild places and wild selves. We love what we find beautiful, and we protect what we love."

"Marjory Stoneman Douglas was a pioneer for South Florida's natural environment, and it's only fitting that her namesake park reflects her legacy," said Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner. "The planned mural will be a meaningful addition that connects our community to its history while enhancing one of our city's beloved parks."

South Florida Visual Artist Amauri Torezan Inspires Us With His Minimalist, Retro Abstract Style

'Magic City', 60 x 60 inches, acrylic on canvas

Brazilian-born artist Amauri Torezan creates impressive geometric and organic compositions evoking a sense of depth, as though the flatly painted shapes were eternally suspended in space. His influences range from the work of the pioneers of abstract art to the Brazilian modernists, not only in the visual arts, but also architects such as Oscar Niemeyer and the landscape designer/painter Roberto Burle Marx.

The Dalmar Hotel in Fort Lauderdale features Amauri Torezan’s graphic mural in Sparrow’s wraparound terrace. Photography by Bob Gundu.

In his work, shapes and lines seem to float around each other as if they were suspended in space. Layers of contrasting colors enhance the exuberant depth effect, creating a sensation of vibrant life.

Torezan’s works have been exhibited at The Baker Museum, Coral Springs Museum of Art as well as in art galleries and international art fairs. Torezan has painted monumental murals in the Wynwood Arts District and the luxury hotel The Dalmar.

Among his artistic collaborations are monumental public murals and partnerships with brands such as the Swiss watchmaker Tag Heuer.

Torezan’s art is held in corporate and private collections worldwide.

Experience the Work of S. Florida Contemporary Artist Dana Donaty

She has completed many award winning public art projects, featured in over 50 national and international publications. Donaty has garnered multiple awards within the design industry, and is sought after to create unique commissions for high profile residential and commercial projects.

U.K. Artist Dan Kitchener Debuts First Solo Show in U.S. ‘TOKYO RAIN’ at Goldman Global Arts Gallery in Wynwood Walls

 https://www.themiamiartscene.com/u-k-artist-dan-kitchener-debuts-first-solo-show-in-the-u-s-tokyo-rain-at-gga-gallery-at-wynwood-walls/

GGA Gallery at the Wynwood Walls proudly presents UK artist Dan Kitchener’s first solo show in the United States: Tokyo Rain. The exhibition debuted to the public on Friday, May 20, 2022, Kitchener (also known as DANK) will present a collection of never-before-seen works that include source photography, sketchbooks, drawings and spellbinding large scale paintings. This range of work highlights Kitchener’s expert draftsmanship and deft freehand spray paint techniques that demonstrate the fascinating genesis from photograph to sketch to painting.

Dan Kitchener & Jessica Goldman Srebnick at GGA Gallery

Although Tokyo Rain is Kitchener’s first solo show in the U.S. and at GGA Gallery, viewers may recognize his work from his huge mural painted inside the Wynwood Walls in 2019. It remains one of the most photographed and engaging murals inside the museum walls.

A painting by Dan Kitchener often starts with a photograph he’s taken from a moment in his real life. The title of the show, Tokyo Rain, invokes a common scene Kitchener finds himself in: in the middle of the night, as rain pours down, he stands still as the city scurries around him, running for cover from the storm. What eventually translates to canvas is an ethereal snapshot of that moment in time. He captures that kinetic energy with saturated colors, blurred lines and epic scale seemingly impossibly through the nozzle of a spray can.

Throughout his whole life, Kitchener has absorbed Japanese culture from black and white samurai films, Godzilla and monster movies, manga and even typography. These influences form Kitchener’s otherworldly, cinematic style. This deep respect and fascination continues as Kitchener travels to new places around the globe. His travels now span dozens of cities and are remembered through hundreds of murals left behind.

Dan Kitchener and GGA curator Peter Tunney have worked closely together over the last year to put together this astounding survey of DANKs work. Although it’s hard to believe, Kitchener uses almost entirely spray paint to create his signature works. The exhibition depicts scenes from Shinjuku, Shibuya, Akihabara, New York City, London and beyond. Tokyo Rain will be open to the public May 20, 2022 through July 2022.

Dan Kitchener is a British artist based in London, who is known for his technique of freehand spray paint on the walls of renowned cities all over the world. From New York City, Moscow, Tokyo, Hong Kong to Kazakhstan, Canada, and Europe, his enormous colorful murals depict street scenes and rainy night cityscapes, bringing light, color and energy to these environments. With a focus on lighting, his artworks have an impressionistic quality, providing the viewer with scenes that resonate with everyone who has ever walked in a city at night. Being a major part of the street art/mural scene since the start of the movement for nearly 16 years, Dan Kitchener’s popularity continues to skyrocket, working with notable celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, Miley Cyrus, Sir Paul McCartney and Lenny Kravitz. He has worked his way around the world becoming one of the leading figures in the street art world, creating a lasting impact on cities one mural at a time.

GGA Gallery is located inside the Wynwood Walls at 266 NW 26th St, Miami, FL 33127.

Miami Artist David (Lebo) Le Batard Surrenders His Artwork To The Sum Of History

David Le Batard, aka LEBO, is a Cuban-American graphic and fine artist based in Miami, Florida. He is best known for his eye-catching murals, live painting, and sculpture.

‘Be Still My Love’

LEBO has been described as one of South Florida’s “most recognizable artists”, and “almost an institution” in the art world for his wide range of media, projects, and locations.

Artist David (LEBO) Le Batard

Better known in the art world as Lebo, this incredible artist is recognized for working in a wide spectrum of creative mediums including murals, paintings and sculptures. Lebo is the innovator of Postmodern Cartoon Expressionism – a combination of cartoon imagery, richly saturated balances of color and unique linear composition brought together in a narrative style to inspire emotion and create layers of meaning.

‘A Very Fine Balance’

Lebo’s visual storytelling method pulls from classic American cartooning and fine art, every form of indigenous art and Egyptian hieroglyphics to create a unique visual language – one that strives to have a wide point of entry for the viewer with endless layers of meaning within. It is a world where mythology, history, metaphysics and illustration all join seamlessly.

‘Ode to the Simple Life’

Born to Cuban immigrant parents and raised in South Florida, Lebo has become one of the most well-respected muralists in Miami. With a showroom in Wynwood and a studio in Miami Beach, Lebo’s art can be found all over the world, in private collections and in corporate partnerships including Norwegian Cruise Lines, Lulu Lemon, Harley Davidson, Audi, Google, Microsoft, Redbull, Ketel One, Bacardi, and Ferrari.

‘The Bright Blessed Day’

“My aim in creating is to explore the purest, most spiritual elements of the arts and sciences (from astronomy to history, from music to physics) and to interpret them through the language of cartoons, giving them a unique and vibrant voice. After all, cartoons are a primordial form of expression that have always combined images in order to tell stories. We have only to think of rock paintings, hieroglyphics or religious iconography for our proof. In reality, even when we look at Picasso’s work after 1905, it all becomes very hard-edged yet organic. The very essence of cartooning.” –David ‘LEBO’ Le Batard.

"Free To Fly'

David’s work is proudly represented by Park West Gallery, the world’s largest art dealer, bringing the experience of collecting fine art to more than 2 million customers since 1969. Park West Gallery represents all original works by Lebo and once the original is sold it can be reproduced in other formats and on various substrates (think metal, wood, ceramics, premium papers etc). These reproductions are of the highest quality and come in various sizes and price points making them more accessible to a wider audience. Artwork by Lebo can be collected through Park West Gallery cruise ship art auctions and art galleries in Florida and Michigan. View published works here.
