U.K. Artist Dan Kitchener Debuts First Solo Show in U.S. ‘TOKYO RAIN’ at Goldman Global Arts Gallery in Wynwood Walls

GGA Gallery at the Wynwood Walls proudly presents UK artist Dan Kitchener’s first solo show in the United States: Tokyo Rain. The exhibition debuted to the public on Friday, May 20, 2022, Kitchener (also known as DANK) will present a collection of never-before-seen works that include source photography, sketchbooks, drawings and spellbinding large scale paintings. This range of work highlights Kitchener’s expert draftsmanship and deft freehand spray paint techniques that demonstrate the fascinating genesis from photograph to sketch to painting.

Although Tokyo Rain is Kitchener’s first solo show in the U.S. and at GGA Gallery, viewers may recognize his work from his huge mural painted inside the Wynwood Walls in 2019. It remains one of the most photographed and engaging murals inside the museum walls.

A painting by Dan Kitchener often starts with a photograph he’s taken from a moment in his real life. The title of the show, Tokyo Rain, invokes a common scene Kitchener finds himself in: in the middle of the night, as rain pours down, he stands still as the city scurries around him, running for cover from the storm. What eventually translates to canvas is an ethereal snapshot of that moment in time. He captures that kinetic energy with saturated colors, blurred lines and epic scale seemingly impossibly through the nozzle of a spray can.

Throughout his whole life, Kitchener has absorbed Japanese culture from black and white samurai films, Godzilla and monster movies, manga and even typography. These influences form Kitchener’s otherworldly, cinematic style. This deep respect and fascination continues as Kitchener travels to new places around the globe. His travels now span dozens of cities and are remembered through hundreds of murals left behind.

Dan Kitchener and GGA curator Peter Tunney have worked closely together over the last year to put together this astounding survey of DANKs work. Although it’s hard to believe, Kitchener uses almost entirely spray paint to create his signature works. The exhibition depicts scenes from Shinjuku, Shibuya, Akihabara, New York City, London and beyond. Tokyo Rain will be open to the public May 20, 2022 through July 2022.

Dan Kitchener is a British artist based in London, who is known for his technique of freehand spray paint on the walls of renowned cities all over the world. From New York City, Moscow, Tokyo, Hong Kong to Kazakhstan, Canada, and Europe, his enormous colorful murals depict street scenes and rainy night cityscapes, bringing light, color and energy to these environments. With a focus on lighting, his artworks have an impressionistic quality, providing the viewer with scenes that resonate with everyone who has ever walked in a city at night. Being a major part of the street art/mural scene since the start of the movement for nearly 16 years, Dan Kitchener’s popularity continues to skyrocket, working with notable celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, Miley Cyrus, Sir Paul McCartney and Lenny Kravitz. He has worked his way around the world becoming one of the leading figures in the street art world, creating a lasting impact on cities one mural at a time.

GGA Gallery is located inside the Wynwood Walls at 266 NW 26th St, Miami, FL 33127.

In Loving Memory: A Tribute to Christo, Known for his Massive Public Arts Projects

Christo, the conceptual artist known for his massive and enduring public art installations around the world, died Sunday of natural causes in New York City. He was 84.

Christo and his wife and artistic partner, Jeanne-Claude, used both natural and manmade monuments as their canvas, wrapping existing structures in fabric to give them new life on a massive scale. Christo and Jeanne-Claude wrapped up famous monuments such as Paris’s Pont Neuf in 1985, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago in 1988, and Berlin’s Reichstag building in 1995. In South Florida, we especially remember Christo and Jeanne-Claude's 'Surrounded Islands' in 1983.

On May 7, 1983, the installation of Surrounded Islands was completed in Biscayne Bay, between the city of Miami, North Miami, the Village of Miami Shores and Miami Beach by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Eleven of the islands situated in the area of Bakers Haulover Cut, Broad Causeway, 79th Street Causeway, Julia Tuttle Causeway, and Venetian Causeway were surrounded with 6.5 million square feet (603,870 square meters) of floating pink woven polypropylene fabric covering the surface of the water and extending out 200 feet (61 meters) from each island into the bay. The fabric was sewn into 79 patterns to follow the contours of the 11 islands.

For two weeks, Surrounded Islands, spreading over 7 miles (11.3 kilometers), was seen, approached and enjoyed by the public, from the causeways, the land, the water and the air. The luminous pink color of the shiny fabric was in harmony with the tropical vegetation of the uninhabited verdant islands, the light of the Miami sky and the colors of the shallow waters of Biscayne Bay.

Since April 1981, attorneys Joseph Z. Fleming, Joseph W. Landers, marine biologist Anitra Thorhaug, ornithologists Oscar Owre and Meri Cummings, mammal expert Daniel Odell, marine engineer John Michel, four consulting engineers, and builder-contractor, Ted Dougherty of A and H Builders, Inc. had been working on the preparation of the Surrounded Islands. The marine and land crews picked up debris from the eleven islands, putting refuse in bags and carting it away after they had removed some forty tons of varied garbage that included refrigerator doors, tires, kitchen sinks, mattresses and an abandoned boat.

Permits were obtained from the following governmental agencies: The Governor of Florida and the Cabinet; the Dade County Commission; the Department of Environmental Regulation; the City of Miami Commission; the City of North Miami; the Village of Miami Shores; the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; the Dade County Department of Environmental Resources Management.

The outer edge of the floating fabric was attached to a 12 inch (30.5 centimeter) diameter octagonal boom, in sections, of the same color as the fabric. The boom was connected to the radial anchor lines which extended from the anchors at the island to the 610 specially made anchors, spaced at 50 foot (15.2 meter) intervals, 250 feet (76.2 meters) beyond the perimeter of each island, driven into the limestone at the bottom of the bay. Earth anchors were driven into the land, near the foot of the trees, to secure the inland edge of the fabric, covering the surface of the beach and disappearing under the vegetation. The floating rafts of fabric and booms, varying from 12 to 22 feet (3.7 to 6.7 meters) in width and from 400 to 600 feet (122 to 183 meters) in length were towed through the bay to each island. There were eleven islands, but on two occasions, two islands were surrounded together as one configuration.

Fabien Castanier Gallery in Los Angeles Sept 16th Opening Reception of "Mark Making" Group Exhibition

Mark Making
with Aaron De La Cruz, Alex Kizu (aka Defer), & Mark Dean Veca
September 16 - October 14, 2017

Opening Reception with the Artists
SATURDAY, SEPT 16th @ 6-9PM

Fabien Castanier Gallery is excited to announce their next exhibition in Los Angeles, Mark Making, featuring work from Aaron De La Cruz, Alex Kizu (aka Defer), and Mark Dean Veca. Each of these artists present work that is built on a foundation of mark-making. Recalling a variety of styles, including abstraction, design, and graffiti, the artists are most familiar with creating large scale installations, pieces that envelope the viewer in realms of meticulously detailed linework and hypnotizing compositions. The exhibition will include paintings, sculpture and installation.

TOP: Alex Kizu (Defer) | "Natural Habitat" (detail) acrylic on canvas, 73.25 x 49.5 in. framed (186x126cm)

Aaron De La Cruz presents paintings and sculpture that incorporate patterns and motifs that at their core are very simple, but when gathered together create complex, labyrinthine compositions. His pieces, with bold lines and distinctive use of color, straddle the line between painting and design. He reduces his expression into its most minimal form, keeping in mind the surface that he paints on as his patterns seem to flow over and within the walls and canvas. The artist's marks are more often than not unplanned and instinctual, work that he hopes the viewer will infuse with their own narrative. By combining a minimalist aesthetic and often purposefully minimal materials, he seeks to create affecting work with maximum impact.

Alex Kizu's work stems from his culture and connection to graffiti and the urban landscape, representing a profound artistic language which distorts the lines between street art and fine art. Kizu, aka Defer, was one of the pioneer members of the first generation of Los Angeles graffiti writers, and he has distilled the hand-style developed since his youth into abstract pieces that incorporate not only typographic motifs but cultural motifs, and complex patterning. Kizu's paintings are highly detailed examinations of line and color, frenetic structures that flow organically with multi-layered abstractions that create a borderless visual depth and complexity.

Mark Dean Veca's newest work evolved out of the textures and patterns found in his more representational compositions. By distilling the line-work aesthetic he has used in part, Veca's paintings and installation are an examination of the patterns and details which have grown organically from his oeuvre. The visual motif in these "Dither" paintings are improvisational – spontaneous and abstracted tessellations that exist un-tethered to any particular orientation. By observing his paintings and stepping into his installation, the viewer is engulfed within an optical meditation. While purely abstract, his forms express a refined organic geometry and a sense of depth and illusion contained within a balanced yet tumultuous array.
