International Call for Artists: BSA Space design exhibition exploring WATER’s role in today’s built and natural environments

WATER
290 Congress Street, Suite 200, Boston, MA, 02210

APPLY NOW

Contact Email: exhibits@architects.org
Call Type: Exhibitions
Eligibility: International
State: Massachusetts
Entry Deadline: 6/30/20
BSA Space seeks proposals for an upcoming design exhibition exploring WATER’s role in today’s built and natural environments, in Boston and beyond.
"Flood us with your ideas."
Sea level rise
Stormwater management
Water safety during construction
Sanitation vs contamination
Infrastructure including transit
Life support
Recreation
…MORE…
We relate to water every day. What does that mean in today's era of widening social chasms and climate change? Why should we care about what is happening with water? Is water our frenemy now? Who owns it? How can the rest of us access it? How do we keep our water clean? What happens when it’s not?
BSA Space is Boston’s only center dedicated to the exploration of architecture and design.
"Curators enjoy over 5,000 sf of gallery space for exploring the roles that design plays in shaping our cities, our communities, and our lives.
Our content is experienced by community members—including kids— as well as design professionals. Successful curators speak clearly to all visitor types."
"BSA Space seeks new ideas, boldly expressed.
Design exhibitions are not books.
Please don’t tell us the things you can show us.
Excite every visitor.
Life exists in three dimensions.
So do our exhibitions."

Who is eligible to submit a proposal for WATER at BSA Space?
This call is open to individuals, teams, or firms (note: proposal should not showcase the work of a single firm or individual). Applicants must have demonstrated experience curating a museum-quality exhibition. Applicants should not feel limited to architectural themes, as the committee will consider proposals that explore a wide variety of design and urban-related topics. Why is it important for the public to learn about the subject? How does the exhibition inspire through the power of design; support public interest in design; present ways to engage the public in innovation and design thinking; explore the use of design to address the issues of social, economic, and cultural inequity?
    3. Interpretive format: what objects, images, exhibition components, and environments will be included? How will this exhibition make its important ideas clear to the public and address multiple styles of learning
    4. Programming: three proposed programs that might accompany the exhibition. Preference will be given to well thought out programming that engages multiple audiences and makes use of strategic partners.

Dolphin-Created Art Brings Conservation Conversation to Superfine! Miami

CLICK BELOW TO MEET OUR NEWEST SUPERFINE! EXHIBITORS
Watch: Dolphin Artists Prepare For Superfine! Miami
At Superfine! - The Fair, when we say "art for all", we really mean it!

Accompanying our talented array of global artists this December will be a team of artists who paint not with their hands but their rostrums (read: mouths), and it's all for a good cause. We're proud to support Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder, a non-profit organization based in Key Largo that rescues stranded dolphins, whales, and other cetaceans in the 10,000 square mile area of ocean surrounding South Florida. The group also maintains two facilities in the Upper Keys where visitors can interact with dolphin ambassadors in order to further the organization's "connect to protect" mantra. Most excitingly, the facility's 8 bottlenose dolphins are accomplished painters! You'll discover their decidedly abstract (maybe expressionist??) works at Superfine! Miami this December, with 100% of proceeds from their art sales going to support the organization's rescue program.

The Superfine! team was lucky enough to visit our favorite non-human painters last weekend, and we managed to capture this incredible video. Take a look, and then see the final product in person at the fair this December!
Above: researcher Dr. Kelley Winship and Isaac the bottlenose dolphin.
Conservation and understanding are the name of the game for the passionate people behind Dolphins Plus. During our Miami Love opening reception at 6PM on Thursday, December 7th, we're giving you a first-hand audience with someone who knows these dolphins better than anyone. You'll hear from trainer and researcher Dr. Kelley Winship, who'll lead a talk centered around these supremely talented and charismatic megafauna, followed by a Q+A session. Even if you don't take a painting home, you'll be supporting stranded marine mammals just by coming - a portion of proceeds from ticket sales go directly to DPMMR. If you miss the talk, fret not: the dolphins' paintings will be on view and available throughout the fair.

Healthy Seas Fashion Project by MEDASSET Exhibition at CRETAquarium Near Heraklion, Crete Through September

MEDASSET’s (Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles) exhibition of clothing made with yarn reclaimed from the sea has reached the second stage of its journey, after a month’s stay at Golden Hall shopping centre in Marousi. CRETAquarium, one of Europe’s largest and most contemporary aquaria, near Heraklion, Crete, has opened its doors to the “Healthy Seas Fashion Project” and presents the exhibition until the end of September.

The exhibition was created with the support of the Representation of the EC in Greece, on the occasion of MEDASSET’s first anniversary as coordinator in Greece of the European initiative: “Healthy Seas: A Journey from Waste to Wear”.

The “Healthy Seas” initiative aims to remove fishing nets that have been caught up on wrecks or snagged by rocky outcrops on the ocean floor. The deadly “ghost nets” go on trapping all kinds of marine creatures, such as turtles, dolphins, seals, etc., but once they are removed they can be processed, along with other waste products, and recycled to make ECONYL® – a premium quality yarn that is ideal for use in the manufacture of clothing and other products, such as carpet. The initiative promotes a new model of sustainable development that is based on the concept of a circular economy – maximising the potential of existing resources while reducing their waste. It is being run in 5 European states (Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Greece and the United Kingdom).

Once visitors to the aquarium have admired the 2,000 individual marine creatures from 200 different Mediterranean species, they will have an opportunity to enjoy a unique exhibition that demonstrates what can happen when environmental awareness, fashion, and the principles of the circular economy meet. Behind-the-scenes videos illustrate how the Fashion Project came into being, while breath-taking underwater footage, which show just how damaging “ghost nets” can be to marine fauna, complete the experience.

The garments displayed in the exhibition have all been created by students and recent graduates of the fashion department of AKTO College of Art and Design. They represent the work of finalists in MEDASSET’s competition, “Healthy Seas: A Journey from Waste to Wear” Fashion Project, which took place in May 2016 in collaboration with the DoitEco Project. Each of the 10 exhibitors, chosen from an initial entry of 23, has used fabric woven in Italy from ECONYL® yarn together with other environmentally-friendly materials (such as organic cotton, plant-based dyes, re-purposed cloth, linen and canvas) to create a pair of garments based on a common concept; one a ‘ready to wear’ piece and the other a more ‘conceptual’ one.

“Healthy Seas: A Journey from Waste to Wear” Fashion Project is run under the auspices of the Hellenic Republic Ministry of Culture & Sports, UNEP/MAP – the United Nations Environment Programme’s Mediterranean Action Plan under the Barcelona Convention, SEV Business Council for Sustainable Development, and the Greek Council for UNESCO. It is supported by the Representation of the EC in Greece, ASAP Athens, Kosmocar, ΑΝΕΚ Lines και Blue Star Ferries.

The General Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, Ms Maria Vlazaki, declared: “The highly original concept that underpins this exhibition, and the emphasis it places on taking environmentally sound action and the value of using recycled materials in the manufacture of useful new products, point the way toward strategies for raising awareness in society of how interconnected culture and the environment truly are.”

The exhibition stage was designed and built by Greek Architect Evi Polychroniadou.
