National Call for Artists: Clay Art Center, New York presents 'The Family Portrait'

The Family Portrait
40 Beech Street
Port Chester, NY 10573

APPLY NOW

Contact Email: gallery@clayartcenter.org
Call Type: Exhibitions
Eligibility: National
State: New York
Entry Deadline: 6/30/20

Entry Fee (The Family Portrait): $25.00
In 2020, Clay Art Center’s gallery theme is Welcome Home, which will focus on all the elements that make a home; exploring the meaning of family, the daily routines, moments and items that surround us and add to our sense of home, and the interaction of the people within to create that place which develops our sense of identity.
"Our Call For Entry Exhibition is 'The Family Portrait', and our guest juror is Kukuli Velarde. We invite artists to submit works that look at the family unit as image, as a system, and as historical reference and contemporary metaphor for where we are as a culture, a society, and in our sense of selves."
“It is haunting to think about those who were here in the world before us. Who were those people who passed their DNA to us, and with it, gave us imprinted memories of their times, and the times in which their own ancestors lived?
There were a number of impossible-to-imagine acts of love, and also acts of violence, for us to become. What is a family portrait, if not a snapshot we choose to grab from a history of hundreds of years of survival, overcoming, and living; living with all our might and against all odds? A family portrait might not include blood related individuals, or even those with whom we share physical likeness. It could mean perhaps the physical rendering of a trait, that appears in the family tree as a legacy from our ancestors. It could be the sum of cultural elements of the place where we came from, or parents came from, or grandparents came from. It could be an object that symbolizes the combination of cultural roots. It could be a self-portrait depicting the cultural elements that we recognize in ourselves and that belong to our heritage. Who are we but the sum of many lives, many experiences, many paths. Let’s think of the offspring that will come in a hundred years from your family tree; as her/his ancestor, what could you communicate about you, and the ones that preceded you?”

Call Type: Public Art
Eligibility: National
State: South Dakota
Entry Deadline: 6/30/20

Entry Fee (RFQ for Public Art for Bob Shelden Baseball Field Renovation, City of Brookings, SD): $10.00
The Brookings Public Arts Commission, in partnership with the City of Brookings, SD, seeks an artist to develop, fabricate and install permanent outdoor artwork within the Bob Sheldon Baseball Field and surrounding complex scheduled for a $3 Million renovation in 2020.

PUBLIC ART PROJECT BUDGET
The total project budget is $190,000 for artist fee, materials, fabrication, insurance, travel, transportation, shipping and installation costs. The total budget should also include engineering fees, excavation requirements, footings and electrical costs associated with the artwork. Although, depending on specific final artwork proposals, some site preparation, lighting and electrical expenses could be included in the overall baseball facility project construction budget.
The public art project is planned for an area where visitors will congregate. The artwork should be highly visible within the surrounding park environment and serve as a marker or “gateway” while encouraging visitor interaction. The artwork should also visually complement the overall ambiance of an old baseball park as reflected in nearby structures, foliage and landscape features.
The completed work must be accessible to all by considering those with special needs, while meeting all requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Completed artwork must also be composed of the highest quality materials and constructed according to best practices to withstand the potentially harsh weather conditions of South Dakota.
PROJECT SITE AND HISTORY
The project site located at 621 Medary Avenue in Brookings, is one of the primary amenities of the Dwiggins-Medary Community Park and Athletic Complex. It is also adjacent to Brookings High School. The facility is a dual-purpose athletic field and hosts youth baseball activities under the auspices of the City of Brookings Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department and Brookings Friends of Baseball. It also hosts sub-varsity football games for the Brookings School District. The facility Owner is the City of Brookings.
Bob Shelden Field was dedicated in October 1968, at which time it was named to honor the memory of the late Robert (Bob) Shelden, outstanding Brookings High School and South Dakota State College athlete. Bob Shelden passed away at the age of 21 on April 23, 1962, after a five month illness with Hodgkin’s disease.
Playing basketball, football, and baseball as well as participating in track, Bob Shelden gained All-State honors in both football and basketball on the Brookings Bobcat team of coach Nig Johnson, and graduated ninth in his class of 117 in 1959, serving as president of the BHS National Honor Society. Prior to his enrollment at SDSC, Bob was recruited by major NCAA powers Minnesota, Colorado, Arizona, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. In his sophomore year at SDSC, majoring in Professional Chemistry, Bob was a starting guard for the Jackrabbit basketball team and was considered “a top prospect to be an all-time Jackrabbit great” according to coach Jim Iverson. That Jackrabbit team won the NCC, Regionals, and finished third in the National Tournament as Bob set a SDSC field goal shooting record that stood for many years. Attesting to his quiet dignity and sincere humility, he was voted “most inspirational” cager by his fellow basketball players in the spring of 1962, even though he had missed the season because of his illness.
Bob Shelden’s tie with Brookings baseball is further strengthened by his pitching for the Brookings Cub amateur team and during the summer of 1961, he was employed by the City’s Park Department maintaining the baseball field. More information about the history of baseball in Brookings may be found at brookingsbaseball.com.

SELECTION PROCESS and PROJECTED PROJECT TIMELINE:
The Brookings Public Arts Commission along with facility and community representatives will select up to 3 finalists who will be paid an honorarium of $2,000 each for a detailed final proposal of artwork. Entry Deadline: 6/30/20
BSA Space seeks proposals for an upcoming design exhibition exploring WATER’s role in today’s built and natural environments, in Boston and beyond.
"Flood us with your ideas."
Sea level rise
Stormwater management
Water safety during construction
Sanitation vs contamination
Infrastructure including transit
Life support
Recreation
…MORE…
We relate to water every day. What does that mean in today's era of widening social chasms and climate change? Why should we care about what is happening with water? Is water our frenemy now? Who owns it? How can the rest of us access it? How do we keep our water clean? What happens when it’s not?
BSA Space is Boston’s only center dedicated to the exploration of architecture and design.
"Curators enjoy over 5,000 sf of gallery space for exploring the roles that design plays in shaping our cities, our communities, and our lives.
Our content is experienced by community members—including kids— as well as design professionals. Successful curators speak clearly to all visitor types."
"BSA Space seeks new ideas, boldly expressed.
Design exhibitions are not books.
Please don’t tell us the things you can show us.
Excite every visitor.
Life exists in three dimensions.
So do our exhibitions."

Who is eligible to submit a proposal for WATER at BSA Space?
This call is open to individuals, teams, or firms (note: proposal should not showcase the work of a single firm or individual). Applicants must have demonstrated experience curating a museum-quality exhibition. Applicants should not feel limited to architectural themes, as the committee will consider proposals that explore a wide variety of design and urban-related topics. BSA Space also considers traveling exhibitions that have formerly been exhibited at other venues.

Why is it important for the public to learn about the subject? How does the exhibition inspire through the power of design; support public interest in design; present ways to engage the public in innovation and design thinking; explore the use of design to address the issues of social, economic, and cultural inequity?
    3. Interpretive format: what objects, images, exhibition components, and environments will be included? How will this exhibition make its important ideas clear to the public and address multiple styles of learning
    4. Programming: three proposed programs that might accompany the exhibition. Preference will be given to well thought out programming that engages multiple audiences and makes use of strategic partners.
    5. Impact: What aspects of this exhibition might provoke positive change
