Spectrum Miami and Red Dot Miami, The only two shows under one roof during Miami Art Week

Spectrum Miami and Red Dot Miami celebrated a global showcase in contemporary art during Miami Art Week inside Mana Wynwood convention center, December 4—8, reporting record sales and more than 6,000 guests attending the Opening Night Preview Party. Both shows saw an increase of 5% in attendance over the five days.

To mark commencement of the five-day global kaleidoscope in contemporary art, culture and entertainment, the annual Opening Night Preview Party took place on Wednesday, December 4th, sponsored in association with Jadot and Bulleit Bourbon. Guests experienced the Bulleit 3D Printed Frontier – a jaw dropping 3D printed bar designed by the award-winning architecture and inspired by the iconic Bulleit Bourbon label and award-winning whiskey. Guests lined-up for hours for their own 3D printed cocktails and the debut of the new Bulleit Art in a Bottle Collection, with live demonstrations by contemporary artist Elidea, together with urban artist Jason Skeldon. Thousands of the world’s most affluent art dealers, collectors, artists, gallery owners, curators and art enthusiasts attended the opening night extravaganza for Spectrum Miami and Red Dot Miami to enjoy Louis Jadot Wines and hors d'oeuvres, as well as the hottest sounds, presented this year by San Francisco's DJ Jazzy T.

“This year’s shows saw a far more sophisticated audience,” says Eric Smith, president of Redwood Media Group. “Through our ongoing and long standing partnerships in the arts, culture and luxury lifestyle industry, we enjoyed a record attendance through the doors over the five days of Miami Art Week. When attendees weren't meeting the exhibiting artists and gallery owners, they were watching Artblend artist Anna Thurber take a chainsaw to a block of frozen flowers to create her next masterpiece and street artist and muralist Cloe Hakakian use a Lamborghini Aventador-S as her canvas outside the main entrance, among other live demonstrations.

Spectrum Miami, presented for its 9th year, featured the works of more than 200 exhibiting galleries and artists from the Florida region, the U.S. and around the globe, informed by the 2019 curatorial theme [IGNITE]. Known for its urban and upscale works of art, the five-day show attracted more than 40,000 visitors and high-net-worth collectors who interact with the specially curated programming, while celebrating the fine art experience with music, entertainment and other special events. This year’s Spectrum Miami included Art Labs, the Spotlight Program, Discoveries Collection, live art demonstrations and the new [LOCAL TALENT] Program, showcasing a curated group of emerging and unrepresented artists who created a special exhibition at the show, selected from a collaboration among local art institutions and galleries. This year’s Art Labs included SCIENCE AND HUMANISM presented by artist Yang Yibin; FLOWER KISSES presented by artist Grace Chadwick and IGNITING THE MATADOR: A LAMBORGHINI INSTALLATION presented by street artist Cloe Hakakian. This year’s Spotlight Program was a focused look at a specially curated group of recipients: Alfano Sculpture, ArtnWordz, Elidea Art, Henrie Collection, Jason Perez Art, and Todd Monk Art.

The Spectrum Miami Discoveries Collection presented a selection of unique discoveries from this year’s exhibitors, including Chat Art Studio, Malcolm Smith, Hamilton Artistry, Miri Marchese, Tom Lohner, and Coco GenZ. The Discoveries Collection at Spectrum Miami showcased a broad range of artist’s work priced at $3,000 or less. The inaugural [LOCAL TALENT] Program represented some of the exceptional artistic talent residing in Miami-Dade College and attending the sought-after Kendall Campus Art Program. [LOCAL TALENT] is intended to amplify and support the best of Miami’s emerging visual arts community.

Artblend artist mosaic master Doug Powell placed the first piece of the weekend, "Route 66," for $16,000, and by the end of the weekend, Michaela Kuechenhoff and Grant Rosen of Artnwordz had placed over 39 pieces, including "Winging It" for $5,800 and "Cool Hand Luke" for $4,500.

Red Dot Miami, a curated gallery-only contemporary art fair, presented for its 14th year, saw the highly anticipated annual presentation of leading galleries and their artists, informed by [PASSION] as the curatorial theme for 2019. Red Dot Miami featured more than 60 galleries representing over 500 leading contemporary artists from primary and secondary markets throughout the world. The five-day show attracted more than 40,000 visitors and high-net-worth collectors who interacted with the specially curated programming, including live art demonstrations, the Spotlight Program, Art Labs, and the Discoveries Collection: presenting a series of unique discoveries from this year’s exhibitors.

The Discoveries Collection at Red Dot Miami showcased a broad range of artist’s work priced at $5,000 or less.

Contemporary Art Projects USA artist Luis Kaulani placed the first piece of the weekend, “Metal Shape 2063”, along with Jackie Fuch’s diptych “Well, Well, Well…” and “What Do We Have Here?” By the end of the fair, Renssen Art Gallery had placed 12 pieces, including three originals, ranging from $10,000 to $12,500.

Artist Robin Babitt Combines Her Passion For Art & Cooking Into Her Work, With Recipes For Each Art Piece!

Robin has always seen life in color, “Letters are different shades of colors. Numbers are primary colors. In elementary school I saw the alphabet above the black chalkboard as a rainbow. Art class was my ally, and algebra my adversary. I thought everyone saw the alphabet as I did until I learned of a phenomenon that identified me. I have been described as unique, colorful and animated and I could not tell you why,” explained the artist. This phenonmenon is known as Synesthesia, and it can involve any of the senses. The most common form, colored letters and numbers, occurs when someone always sees a certain color in response to a certain letter of the alphabet or number. We recently had the pleasure to chat with Robin to learn more about her art and current projects:

Q – What is the best part about being an artist?

A – Being an artist allows me the freedom to express myself beyond the written word. We take up a lot of air space talking about nothing but one painting, one photograph, a recipe, a song or a dance can be expressed without uttering a word. I don’t know of any other profession that validates and honors ‘the art of being unique’. One of the best things about being an artist is that I get the chance to “start over” every time I unwrap a new white canvas. To me its like a new day, an opportunity to better my craft, better myself, and see the vision of a new outcome that I’m bringing to life.

Q – You have such a magical talent, can you tell us about “seeing letters and numbers in color”?

A – My magical talent is that I see things differently than others see them. I see things through a child’s kaleidoscope. From the very beginning, I’ve been described as unique, colorful and possessing a ‘light’. Some have told me that people are drawn to me because of this ‘light’. I see letters as shades of colors and numbers as primary colors. Days of the week are colors as are months of the year, and music and songs. The letters in someone’s name will determine whether or not we’ll have a friendship, relationship, be acquaintances or possibly nothing. The price on a menu (numbers) is a determining factor in what I’ll order. I would easily choose an entrée for $26.00 over an entrée for $29.00. The ‘6’ in the $26.00 is very bright compared to the ‘9’ in $29.00. The position of lighter letters in someone’s name is a determining factor as well, but this was normal for me. I never gave it a moment’s thought. I though everyone saw things in color, until my daughter called me from college one day in 2007 and told me that she had learned about what I have. I didn’t know I had anything! She proceeded to tell me that it’s a phenomenon called Synesthesia, aka Graphene-color synesthesia and Chromesthesia, sound-to-color. After she explained it to me, I did some research. It was to a ‘T’; exactly what I’ve seen throughout my life and at that moment I realized that others did not see the world in color as I do. My life is in color as you can see by my art. I can’t imagine living any other way. I choose to create fun in vibrant colors to jolt fond, happy memories from that inner child that may have been lost while we are trying to grow up.

Q – Can you tell us about your Recipes for Art and how you incorporate feelings and experiences into your art practice?

A – My recipe book for art is designed to give children, teens and young adults not only a taste for cooking, but a taste for art. Combining these two ingredients is the perfect recipe for simple fun, interaction, laughter, creativity and joy. My book will be a Kitchen/Coffee Table “Gotta Have”. Bridging the gap between the generations, bridging the gap between knowing how to boil water and making something worthy of serving is a positive, fun way to learn, make mistakes, laugh at yourself, be humble, be confident, knowing all the while that if all else fails, you can either send out for a pizza or make one yourself! All recipes are tried and true, and each original painting giclee or print is accompanied with the specialty recipe for that piece of art. The Bon Art-Petit Recipe/Art Book is presently in production.

Q – In your opinion, what role does an artist have in society?

A – The role of an artist in society is to give others a reason or cause to engage; permission to express themselves, seeing different perspectives and accepting another’s uniqueness. Artists exist in a world where conformity and judgements have no place and diversity is embraced.

Q – What is your creative process like?

A – My creative process is simple. It’s all personalities. I see my creations with individual personalities: playful, fun, and happy. Broccoli has big hair. My leek pancakes look like Wolfman Jack. Ms. Bomb is a banana and a pole dancer, and the Christmas Tree just wants a ‘Silent Night’. A fortune cookie dressed in a suit with a briefcase filled with cash envies, the wontons floating down the river in soup bowls. Any woman would prefer a beautiful stiletto to a skewer when preparing shish kabob.

Q – You’ve worked on so many incredible projects, which one was your most enjoyable?

A – I love all the pieces I create. I create personalities. My favorite pieces are those that make a statement and the pieces that made you who you are. Big Yellow Taxi was awesome because we are losing a lot of our paradise to demolition and continuous building. Chasing Cars was created for Breast Cancer Awareness Month as I am a survivor since 2006. It was a thrill to do this painting and donate it to my Doctor of Oncology at Lynn Cancer Center and send copies to the doctors who took care of me in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. My political series is called ‘Iffencare’, and those are more personal like the shooting in Parkland titled “Every Parent’s Nightmare” for gun control. My political paintings have been sent to Washington and various media institutions.
