WMODA Mermaid Adventure June 12th

 

Explore the enchanted world of the fired arts at WMODA during Museum Week 2021. Mermaids Experience the Mermaid's Adventure on Saturday, June 12 from 10am to 4pm and celebrate Mershark Rhanu's magical contribution to WMODA. On land, Rhanu is better known as Alex Barth and she will share her passion for sharks and ocean conservation. See Rhanu's new wearable glass top made especially for her by glass artist and fashion designer Chelsea Rousso. Learn more Rainbows Follow the pirate's treasure map to find miniature ceramics hidden around the museum. Watch them being made on the potter's wheel by Alex Meiklejohn. Redeem your prize at the end of the rainbow in our Hot Glass Gallery, which is on fire with rainbow glass art for Pride Month. Earth Day Celebrate the beauty of the EARTH in the Fired Arts at WMODA. The new exhibit, which opens on April 17, highlights the four classical elements of EARTH, AIR, FIRE and WATER that ancient philosophers believed were the fundamental building blocks of nature. See how today’s artists are breathing life into glass by using the natural resources of the EARTH. LOVE IT.   Read More Dania Beach Mermaids WMODA visitors are having fun with the Mermaid Quest scavenger hunt to find all the mermaids hiding around the museum. Soon the scope of the challenge will widen to include the City of Dania Beach. This summer, the 1000 Mermaids Project will deploy the first artificial coral reef installation in Broward County to help conserve Florida’s marine environment. Meet Rhanu, WMODA's very own mermaid-in-residence, and watch local artist Laurence Panadero create a mermaid sculpture in clay.   Read More Leaves of Glass A new exhibit Earth, Air, Fire & Water @ WMODA opens on April 17 to celebrate Earth Day and the beauty of nature in the Fired Arts. Central to the show is a series of glass leaf vessels and sculptures by Miami artist Rob Stern. Rob is fascinated by the fragile balancing act between humanity and nature, which he explores through the bounty of the earth. In Rob’s words “Humanity is transcended as we reflect the rhythm and patterning in this natural world.” Star Volunteers In National Volunteer Month, we are celebrating the invaluable work of all the WMODA volunteers who help develop and sustain the museum. April was designated as volunteer month in 1991 as part of the 1000 Points of Light campaign. George W. H. Bush likened volunteerism to “a brilliant diversity spread like stars, like a thousand points of light in a broad and peaceful sky." The creature’s daily life was documented for almost a year by Craig Foster, a South African filmmaker and naturalist. The pair formed an extraordinary bond and the experience changed Foster’s life. Read More Firing Miss Daisy Ninety years ago, in April 1931, Daisy Makeig Jones left Wedgwood after a blazing row with Josiah Wedgwood IV. Initially she had been asked to retire from her position as the designer of Fairyland Lustre, but she refused and continued to come to work. Artist Lenore Rae Lampi's Work Explores the Lush Folds, Twists and Forces of Physics in Natural Forms and Textiles

The possibilities of form and movement lend a fluidity to Lenore Lampi‘s sculptural ceramic artwork. Her work is appealing not only because the designs are eloquent, but also because the subject matter reflects poignant memories and notions of endurance.

Sculptor Lenore Rae Lampi has been associated with her biomorphic birch bark series for years but has recently moved seamlessly into a new arena of cultural commentary and pop-art influenced objects. In her latest Big Bling Series, Lenore has embraced the forms of ribbons and bows, essentially birch bark of another kind, the outermost layer of cultural icons and nostalgic tendencies.

Lampi’s signature work is a study in perception and a reflection o f the undulating movement of tree bark. Her Big Bling series explores adornments such as ribbons, bows, and streamers, monumentalizing these humble objects while evoking feelings of nostalgia. Both series use clay as a starting point to explore lush folds, twisting shapes, and the forces of physics in natural forms and textiles.

Collectors and art aficionados recently had the opportunity to experience Lampi’s work on exhibit at the 23rd Edition of Art Palm Beach with Steidel Contemporary Booth 422, January 30 – February 3, 2020. Lenore Lampi earned a BA in fine art and an MA in art education from the University of Minnesota. She has studied under and learned from many notable artists, including Dorian Beaulieu, Bob Husby, Holly Anderson Jorde, and Wenzhi Zhang. She participated in the International Wood Fire Conference in China in 2007.

Always fascinated with the undulating forms in Classical drapery since the days of observing her mother’s workings as a seamstress, Lenore now captures this movement and narrative with a Pop Art sensibility. Her new series explores the notion of adornment of the affordable kind. Ribbons, bows, and streamers in an historical context may evoke feelings of nostalgia, kitsch, and pomp. Referencing Pop Art to describe the work, with the intention to monumentalize these humble objects.
