Fabien Castanier Gallery @ AQUA Art Miami
December 4 – 8, 2024
Room 203

Fabien Castanier Gallery is excited to participate in this year's edition of the AQUA Art Miami fair, taking place December 4-8. The gallery will showcase the work of contemporary Portuguese artist ADD FUEL, in a solo exhibition entitled REQUIEM (for) APOPHENIA. The gallery's space at the Aqua Hotel in Miami Beach will invite visitors into the mesmerizing kaleidoscopic imagination of the artist as he presents a new body of work that sits in dialogue with an immersive installation. The exhibition will extend beyond the walls of the solo show, as guests to the fair will witness the façade of the hotel transformed. ADD FUEL will complete a mural on the front of the building, entitled "MOVIMENTO EN ÁGUA".

ADD FUEL's work continues to showcase the meticulous technique in which the artist has honed, the manipulation of ceramic tiles. Incorporating masterful rendering of patterns, he creates work that engages the eye with visual depth both within the sculptural nature of his pieces as well as in the intricate painted motifs. His exhibition for the AQUA fair will incorporate his pieces within an installation, including adorned floors and walls. The show will allow visitors to enter another world, surrounded by echoing motifs and complex imagery that create gateways to the unexpected, where every transposition conceals a story yearning to be observed and deciphered.

As an exploration of different aesthetic possibilities and the juxtaposition of heritage and modernity, ADD FUEL's work reinterprets the language of traditional tile design, specifically that of the Portuguese tin-glazed ceramic azulejo. Historically used as large-scale decoration upon buildings, the Portuguese tile work inhabited a cultural space that contained biblical and mythological references and blended seamlessly with their architecture. Utilizing the complexities and depth offered by this style, ADD FUEL creates multi-layered patterned compositions that produce a poetic rhythm, playing with perception and illusion.

ADD FUEL (b. 1980, Cascais), Portuguese visual artist Diogo Machado, began his practice with a degree in graphic design from Lisbon's IADE – Institute of Visual Arts, Design and Marketing. He spent several years working in design studios in Portugal as well as Munich, Germany, and since 2007 has focused exclusively on his artistic work. Exploring a wide range of both manual and digital techniques in the fields of drawing, painting, ceramics, and printing, his practice expresses a sophisticated dialogue between the old and the new. Besides numerous public art presentations he has created all around the world, ADD FUEL continues to showcase his work with solo and group exhibitions in international galleries.

The fair kicks off with a VIP Preview on Wednesday, Dec. 4, featuring a special performance by renowned DJ A-Trak, and runs through Sunday, Dec. 8. The fair continues to push boundaries and drive the conversation around contemporary art.

This year's edition will feature highlights including inaugural U.S. presentations by global artists, special projects, and groundbreaking works by artists pushing the envelope with relevant topics such as the environment, humanitarian efforts, and the intersection of technology and art. Fabien Castanier Gallery: RERO Solo Exhibition "IMAGO" On View Now through April 23

IMAGO
Solo Exhibition from RERO
March 26 - April 23
Fabien Castanier Gallery is excited to present a solo exhibition for French contemporary artist, RERO. The exhibition, entitled IMAGO, is on view March 26 through April 23. This will be the fifth solo exhibition for RERO at the Castanier Gallery, marking ten years of collaboration that began in 2012 with his first solo outing in the U.S. Presenting a new body of mixed media work, RERO continues to transcend genres with his provocative text-based pieces.

IMAGO will expound the raw power of words set upon both society's most humble and grand backdrops. While RERO's medium varies to embolden the meaning behind his statements, at times rugged and industrial as poured concrete or filled with deep sentiment as resin covered found objects, for this exhibition he has chosen to conduct a philosophical snapshot of our current moment. Entrenched within a time of extreme change, the artist posits an alternative reality, one that speaks towards a more hopeful and attainable future.
RERO, "Untitled (PLEASE REMOVE YOUR EGO HERE...)" mixed media on wood diptych, 40 x 64 in. (102x163cm) Photography by Thomas Granovsky
The term "imago" carries multiple intertwined meanings, and this polysemy of interpretations sits at the foundation of RERO's work for his exhibition. The notion of "imago" is rooted within two main sectors. Latin for "image" the term is both the final stage in the metamorphosis of a butterfly or a moth, the optimal state it reaches through its process of growth and development, and an unconscious idealized mental image of someone, especially a parent or loved one, who influences a person's behavior or promotes, develops and facilitates change, resilience, and independence. The chosen phrases for RERO's varied corpus of works circulate around these concepts of change and the chase towards an ideal. Dreams and ambitions mix with skepticism and often sarcasm, where his text delves into the complex psychosis of one who has lived, and perhaps suffered, through our modern world.

RERO's work encourages balance. The ever-present strikethrough of his text is meant as a purposeful obfuscation of his intentions. Rather than lean into the extremes of his text's sentiments, the artist prefers to leave the interpretation up to the viewer. One need not condone excessiveness nor austerity, but live somewhere in the middle. A poignant attitude to armor oneself with when faced with the frequent severity of opinions sampled within the pieces' bold declarations.

Intriguing, luminous, rich in modern and transgressive poetry, RERO's works have been presented at the MAC/VAL, the Center Pompidou, the CentQuatre, the Vasarely Foundation, the Grand Palais and the MAC Bogotá. Full of audacity, his off-format installations have taken root on the dunes of the Moroccan desert, in the heart of Latin America and in the landscapes of California.

Fabien Castanier Gallery: Mark Jenkins "The Harder They Come" Exhibition

The Harder They Come
Solo Exhibition by Mark Jenkins
March 26 – April 23, 2022

OPENING RECEPTION WITH THE ARTIST
SATURDAY MARCH 26 @5-8pm
Fabien Castanier Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition for American artist Mark Jenkins. The Harder They Come is on view March 26 through April 23, beginning with an opening reception with the artist on Saturday March 26th. This is the third solo exhibition for Mark Jenkins at the Castanier Gallery, featuring a new collection of his signature sculptures and installations.

Mark Jenkins' sculptures continue to confront viewers with reality-bending immersion that for this exhibition shines a spotlight on the struggles of oppression and societal imbalance within the current global political climate. Tableaus that are at times imaginatively witty or dark and poignant, reflect a deeper understanding of the theatricality of life. The artist creates these hyper-realistic figures from casting the bodies of real people, more often than not from himself. By taking the realism of a life-size human sculpture and adorning it with absurdity, Jenkins exhibits an exploration of the surreal. The viewer's reaction to the sculptures become part of the pieces – as the artist seeks to envelop the audience within the installation, holding a mirror up to the complexities of human connection and the collective unrest born from oppressive circumstances.

Currently based out of Richmond, VA, Jenkins has spent the last decade bringing his artwork to a variety of important and notable global spaces. Beginning in 2017 he collaborated with Balenciaga, creating sculptures wearing the fashion house's garments. Several projects with Balenciaga brought Jenkins' sculptures to New York, Paris, and London. In 2018, he conceptualized a powerful art installation, where 84 life-size figures were placed standing on the roof of the ITV buildings in Southbank London. Entitled "Project84" the installation aimed to bring awareness to the prevalence of male suicide in the U.K. In 2019, Jenkins participated in the Rose Béton biennale/art festival held in Toulouse France, where he installed a number of sculptures in the public space. The same year, the city of Laguna Beach (CA) commissioned five of his figures for placement in front of their City Hall. Entitled "The Caretakers", the sculptures were occupied with absurd activities, such as vacuuming the lawn.

Jenkins sculptures are at home both within the gallery space as well as in the urban landscape. Their presence often defies logic and by pushing the boundaries of immersive installation, he continues to re-define the limits of the consumer's relationship to the art and the artist

CULTURE
Ed Broner Solo Exhibition | ON VIEW NOW THROUGH JANUARY 31
By appointment only.

A full catalog of work is available, please contact the gallery for more information.

Fabien Castanier Gallery is excited to present a solo exhibition for contemporary French artist, Ed Broner. The exhibition, Culture, is on view December 6 – January 9 at the gallery's location in Little Haiti. The show will commence with the seasonal Progressive Art Brunch on Sunday Dec 6th, during Miami's Art Week. This is the first solo exhibition for Ed Broner at the gallery, featuring new drawings and paintings on canvas.

For Culture, Broner presents a body of work produced during the Covid-19 lockdown at his studio in Berlin. The paintings were executed based on a series of 300 drawing studies created during this tumultuous period. Recalling his earliest practice as an artist, these pieces are reminiscent of his old blackbook sketches from the 1980s. The paintings open a dialogue on a variety of subjects, all with a focus on the struggles and confrontations within our current societal climate. Greatly influenced by the media and the events occurring in 2020, Broner reveals a complex perspective on both the hope and despair of modern times.

Born in Paris, France, Ed Broner began to paint in the late 1980s as a graffiti artist. Both a photographer and painter, Broner's work is his personal diary – an authentic examination of the ideas and symbols in modern urban subcultures. His style combines influences from graffiti and contemporary painting, as well as from Aboriginal and African art. By reflecting and often subversively ironizing particular aesthetics, Broner deconstructs his thematic elements with an organic and raw objectivity.

About the Artist
Pixel Pancho (b. 1984, Turin) studied formally at the Academy of Fine Arts in Albertina and finished his study in Valencia, Spain. During his education, and especially during his time in Spain, he became well known in the world of graffiti and street art. Influenced by artists such as Salvador Dali, Joaquin Sorolla, and the political artist group, El Equipo Cronica, Pixel Pancho had developed his own unique and recognizable style. Incorporating motifs of nature, industry, classical portraiture, and most commonly, robots, his paintings and murals display a finely detailed exploration of imaginative and whimsical worlds. His pieces are often narrative, weaving stories from the bodies of his human-hybrid subjects. His work can be found all over the world, from major cities in Europe, to locations in Mexico and the United States.
