Hui Chi Lee: the Lián; Liàn Series

Join us at Tranter-Sinni Gallery in the Wynwood Arts District for the anticipated Opening Reception of Hui Chi Lee’s solo exhibition, the Lian Lian series, on Friday, February 16th from 6-9pm. Exhibition is on view through March 5, 2018.

"The second series is titled ‘Lián; Liàn’, which are two Chinese homophones meaning ‘to connect’ and ‘to enchain’. This series of large-scale drawings explores the tensions and dynamics between how people are connected and how these connections themselves may also serve to enchain. In part, this series is a reflection on Taiwanese cultural traditions that can seem oppressive in contemporary society. I use the human figure as an agent to prompt discourse on these conditions."

"I am interested in the obscure and anonymous quality of the human form, and I want to guide the viewer to consider the subject matter in a critical, holistic manner. I use color in the subject matter in a symbolic, metaphorical way. Red symbolizes both a warning and an awakening moment in life, and hair signifies the duration of a life span and time of which we are often hardly aware – an acknowledgement of the finitude of life but yet a vision of it as somehow endless," explained Hui Chi Lee.
Free and open to the public, RSVP here.

The styles of each artist are very unique with each having their own technique but all mixing the modern and traditions of their culture. Asian Inspirations will present sisters Canal Cheong-Jagerroos and Joyce Fukunaga, Wai Hong, and Peng Qi. Each four of these artists have demonstrated impressive exhibition history across Europe and Asia but are only just now becoming known in the United States.

HONG Wai, Secret de Boudoir series, Tight, 2015
Ink and color on silver Xuan paper work mounted on silk, 55 x 90 cm

Representing all one country, China, although most of the artists have left their hometowns and developed their techniques and concepts through their travels throughout the world. This is apparent in each style of paintings. Works range from acrylic on canvas to Chinese pigments on rice paper. Some have more contemporary influences, while others have influences deep rooted in ancient Chinese culture. These four artists come together under one roof to showcase their unique talents while still working harmoniously together. This is not one you will want to miss. Exhibit will be on view from March 3rd through April 14th, 2017.
